A couple of pit bulls live a few doors down from me. Nice enough dogs, and im a dog lover so all good. I drove by a few weeks back and one of them broke out and chased me all the way down the road. I didn't want him to continue chasing me as I worried he might get lost or hit by a car, so I stopped. When I stopped he went a bit mental and started jumping up at the car to get to my dogs in the back, and scratched the rear wing pretty bad.

I went to see the chap the next day, first time I ever met him. Australian fella. Quite a nice bloke as it happens and I had a good old chat with him. Anyway he suggested i try the car wash guys see if they can get the scratch out. I did, and it is still there. Two scratches in an arc shape about 2 feet wide.

The reason I am posting this on a forum when it has bugger all to do with Thailand really, is that im genuinely stuck on what to do. I feel like i should go and ask him to chuck a few baht my way to cover the repair work. Im guessing its gonna be around 4 or 5 grand to spray the rear wing area and make it good as new. I just dont know if by asking him i am being a bit of a dick? I dont want to be a dick about it as these things happen in life and it could be said that it is just a random accident, but then again i dont want to come accross as a mug and i dont know if its fair that i should pay?

I dunno.... What would you people do? Is it worth making a fuss about it or should i just leave it? For some reason i honestly cant decide what to do.

Just as a side note, its a 3 year old truck, I paid a million for it and I have looked after it, so its by no means a banger.

Tell him the washing doesn't help. If he is nice he will ask from his own how to solve it. If not you will have to pay it out of your own pocket or see it as the first scratch of many. It's a truck!

If your relationship with him is OK, its worth giving it at go and showing him the damage.

Do you think he would believe you and do you have any witness?

The longer you leave it the more difficult it will be to approach him.

I don't like dogs, personally I am quite happy knocking them down if they get in the way (when I'm in the truck).

I hate them when I am on the motorbike.

Pit bulls are killers and should never be out on their own, could be chasing a kid next time, then killing or ripping the kids face off. Dog owners tend to be very defensive and seem to think their dogs can do no wrong, I know what i'd do!

Maybe show him that the polishing from the car care shop didn't work, and gently ask him if he's prepared to go 50/50. but perhaps get a couple of guotes first.

If he doesn't buy in, ultimately very annoying and frustrating but not worth a serious confrontation.

He actualy seen it happen as both of his dogs got out. One went one way, another chased me. I seen him in my rear view mirror sort of hesitate about which one he should go and chase himself, and he went after the other one. I stopped the car just as he got out of sight and he disapeared into a moo ban to chase his other dog - thats when it happened. SO yup he sort of did see it happen, in a way.

I dunno. Im agonising abit about this which is stupid as stuff like this happens in life, no need to stress about it. But i just cant help feeling a bit of a mug paying for something that his dog did to my car. Like i said, I feel like he should pay..... But i dont want to be an axxxhole about it and if the general opinion here is "its justine of those things, he isnt liable" then i will just let it go and feel ok about it.. Its doing my head in a bit now as i cant decide what is right here....

Boy are you a soft touch, 50/50 what for ? ask for 100% first, cheeky bloke should have offered to pay if it dont come out at the wash anyway.

lets hope they never catch you out of the car ..

Granted but you know.... Its a nice truck lol. Its a V Cross 4 wheel drive, just under 3 years old and i use it as a car. Its not like i run around a farm on it bouncing off trees lol :)

If you hadn't of stopped it wouldn't have happened.

I certainly wouldn't take kindly to being asked for recompense. You stopped the truck with your dogs in his dogs territory.

Life,s not fair, let it ride,

Spray painting one panel would be no more than 3 000 baht.

Could claim in insurance, could ask the owner of the dog to pay, could also put a sticker or have car coated.

Well thats the whole point mate. Truth be told im not that bothered about the scratch. Its only a motor. And im not that bothered about the dough. Its only a few grand. What does my head in more than anything is coming accross as a soft touch or a mug, because that I'm not. I just wanted to get a general feeling from other people here if asking him to pay is right or not because it wouldnt be the first time i have been wrong on something.

Life,s not fair, let it ride,

Outside the house is not a pitbulls 'territory' as they should never be let out on their own. I see one that was got slotted by a falang in Pattaya.

Life,s not fair, let it ride,

It wasnt his teritory. It was the road leading into the moo baan where we both live, a good 300 meters from his house. I would have thought i am alowed to stop a car anywhere I like if its a public road?

You see this is why i wanted to check in here first. I was sure that it should be down to him to pay. But that fact that a few people here are now saying he shouldnt is just spinning my head out....

The guy knows he is in the wrong hence the "take it to the car wash". The dogs should not be getting out although if it happens and it causes a problem he should know he is responsible. As scorecard suggests you need to get some quotes then approach him. We have 2 dogs and know that if something like that happened I would be paying out sad.png .

If put to him in a non confrontational way and he refuses then at least you have tried and have a better idea of what kind of person he is.

As you have intimated for your sake put it to bed ASAP thumbsup.gif .

So hang on he saw it all happen ? any decent person would have already offered to pay... sounds like a bit of a **** to be honest, at least you know if he blows you off.

In the 10-year period from 2005 to 2014, pit bulls killed 203 Americans and accounted for 62% of the total recorded deaths (326). Combined, pit bulls and rottweilers accounted for 74% of these deaths= take care

Ill go and see him tomorow or the day after and sort it out. Like i said, he seems like a friendly bloke so i dont expect him to suddenly turn into a xxxx about it. Chances are he will offer to pay. I guess i just needed a few opinions here first to see if you all agreed. Most of you do, so i dont think im being an arse about it.

Thats all i need, thanks a bunch for the feedback, appreciate it.

Cheers.

Because

1. It makes no difference what the breed of the dog was, jack russells will do the same

2. Because this thread is NOT about how dangerous dogs are

I have neighbors, whose retarded kids drew pictures on my car with a metal screw

Should they be rounded up and shot as well?

Not at all mate. You would not be an arse for asking

How many people were injured or attacked or killed by other people?whistling.gif

Just one more thing..... On the whole Pit Bull topic that a few of you are talking about..... Just my opinion, but i believe they are nice dogs for the most part. They actualy have a nice temperament and are extremely friendly towards people. This only applies if the dogs are raised normaly though. In the wrong hands, abused or not raised properly they can be <deleted> nasty peaces of work. Thats just my opinion. The fact that his dog got out, chased my car and went a bit mental has nothing to do with the fact it is a pit bull as many different breeds of dogs do the same. My dogs included - twice in this last year here they have slipped past me, got through my gate and chased soi dogs all the way up the road. When they caught them they didnt actualy do anything, they just stood there, stared at them for a bit, then came back.

Again, just my opinion. I could well be wrong.

OP, depending where you live, there is a way to get scratches out, if not too deep.

Just polishing would not do it, but in Pattaya, Soi Neumblawan, all the way down, on the right hand side, there is a car wash which advertises scratch removing.

From memory, 2000 baht, they did my whole car, plus wash, wax and polish.

Umm yes it makes a difference, jack Russell is a little less of a handful than a pitbull when they go into one trust me Ive owned a couple, but anyway.

I dont think i mentioned harming anyone or anything did I ?

However that neighbour of yours would have been asked to pay for the damage. Im long since done caring about DH feelings that try to avoid responsibility, thai or farang

Jack Russel would chase the car just as pitbul would, and jack russel is just as handful as a pitbul if one does not have a clue about dogs.

You have owned a couple of what? Pitbuls? and could not control it? in this case, read some books on how to raise and handle dogs.

I have 6 dogs, 2 of them are pitbuls and have no problem handling either EVEN when they go into it.

My little cross breed chases cars if given opportunity.

And this is what thread is about, dog chasing and scratching the car, not dog attacking another dog or a person:thumbsup:

My cat went into neighbors house, freaked out and ran, knocking down the mirror.

I was happy to pay for the new mirror. when the neighbor decided to take a pi$$ and brought the bill for 4 times the mirror was worth, i paid it.BUT told him if it ever happens again, to make sure he has photo's it was my cat in action, otherwise not to bother me anymore.

Only fair to be fair and OP seems like a fair person, so is the owner of the dog, so hopefully it will be settled easy and amicably.
