jackoholly
Hi all A bit random but I'm in a civil partnership with someone of the same sex (a Thai). What I would like to know is if there is a way I can legally have this dissolved within Thailand. It's for when (or if) Thailand recognises them; I'd like to have my options open with my current partner. Cheers in advance.
MatteoBassini
Legally, no because gay marriage isn't an option here in Thailand (although many gay couples do hold marriage ceremonies but nothing is officially documented) But.. since your partner is Thai, I THINK you can create a legal document (with a lawyer) that states that you are the father-in-law and he is your son-in-law. Many gay couples in the US did this and I think it's the only option you have right now. I'm not sure that will work though since only one of you is Thai, but you can always try. jackoholly
So with regards to a divorce (or dissolution) I would have to travel back to the UK to fix it?
MatteoBassini
Oh, I think your misread your first post. Anyways, yes you would have to travel back to the UK. However, I highly suggest contacting a lawyer before travelling back incase there are alternative solutions (such as the British embassy).
AyG
So with regards to a divorce (or dissolution) I would have to travel back to the UK to fix it? You may want to investigate whether it's possible in Vietnam. You can get married there, so logically one would assume that one could get demarried there too. AyG
Looking at the steps to divorce at http://www.family-lawfirm.co.uk/how-we-help/divorce/how-to-get-a-uk-divorce there's nothing there that I can see that requires your physical presence in the UK. The affidavit part can be done at the British Embassy.
