BANGKOK: -- The Law Reform Commission of Thailand (LRCT) will propose amendments to relevant laws so drug abusers are not subjected to criminal punishments, but are instead forced to undergo rehabilitation. LRCT also does not want them detained for 45 days pending drug test results as it is a serious violation of rights.

LRCT president Kanit Na Nakorn said yesterday that the commission would offer a proposal on improving rehabilitation programmes to the prime minister, as well as the chiefs of the National Legislative Assembly and National Reform Council.

In case drug abusers face prosecution for other charges, the proposal says they should first be treated, while alternative measures, such as probation, rehabilitation or social service obligation, can be used as punishment for narcotics consumption or possession.

In related news, the police Narcotics Suppression Bureau yesterday announced two major drug busts. In Chiang Rai's Mae Chan district, two suspects were killed in a gunfight with officials on Sunday night and 580,000 yaba pills, a kilo of "ice", a grenade and a handmade gun were seized. In Khon Kaen's Muang district, four suspects were arrested along with 20,000 yaba pills in a sting operation last week.

These are some good recommendations. I hope someone is listening, but I fear not.

Here's a thought. Have them do community service by cleaning up all beaches in their area if they happen to have beaches, otherwise, cleanup anything in their area that needs cleaning up. There's lots to choose from.
