PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Cambodia’s campaign against illegal Vietnamese workers continues with 26 Vietnamese arrested in two days of raids on furniture factories in central and southern Phnom Penh.

“After questioning at the Immigration Department, all these Vietnamese nationals found working in wood factories had no valid travel documents or work permits,” Major General Uk Heisela, chief investigator at the Ministry’s Immigration Department, said in an interview.

Although, Vietnam’s per capita income of $2,000 a year is double Cambodia’s, some Vietnamese migrate here, often without visas or work permits, because there are job opportunities, and until recently, fewer bureaucratic controls than in Communist-run Vietnam.
