Looking for a second hand car.

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in buying a second hand car, two or four door hatch, four cylinder runabout that's cheap

(To run and buy)

Any suggestions as to how to go about buying privately, or do they have second hand car yards like in Australia where you can buy something for about $1000 upwards?

Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.

Your math is outstanding giddyup!

However I'm looking for a cheap car (as in an inexpensive old bomb, second hand, used from $1000 upwards)

NOT the exchange rate or how much it is in THB

Thnx

And I've already said that 25,000 baht won't buy you much, because cars sell for Baht in Thailand, not Aussie dollars. You don't say where you're located, but Pattaya has dozens of dealers along Sukhumvit Road, try shopping around or alternatively buy the Pattaya Trader for private sales. There are also notice boards at some of the major supermarkets advertising private cars. Is that enough info for you?

Does the Pattaya Trader still exist? It used to have quite a few cars for sale.

That's great, thnx a heap.

I'm up north in NK btw, but if I have to look/go elsewhere doesn't bother me.

Cheers

You are extremely unlikely to find anything that is remotely reliable and safe to drive for 25,000baht (1,000 A$) you need to up your budget to about 100k Thai baht and then look at makes like Proton for newer cars or older Toyotas and Hondas (much older)

I went for the second hand option.

550,000 baht.

To put things into perspective.

I can buy new for that...I want something for the missus to ricochet off between trees etc on way to n from home....the bike just ain't safe enough!

Are there no second hand car dealers near to where you live? Just go into any of them and ask what is the cheapest car in the yard, at least you will get an idea of what's available for low prices.

In LOS, cars retain their value. Why? That is just the way it is.

In a country town, I would delay purchase until there was more available dosh.

CNX has a multitude of used car yards.

I would not buy anything under B2k - take your time.

After 6? years, one needs a roadworthy certificate prior to re-registration. Mechanical repairs - cheap. My FIL charges B150/hr - this is not an adv - he is busy.

Buy a common brand eg Toyota - easy access to parts.

Presumably there is in Udon Thani, I haven't had a look see. Yet.

I'm in au at work and soon to be an unemployed FIFO worker...

Will have a look then, I'm just trying to get an idea at what I'm facing and some handed down local knowledge.

I'm getting just that.

I just sold my 10 year old Isuzu D Max with a 100,000 klm, in excellent condition, for 200,000 baht, could have got 300,000, but sold it to the wife's family for what a dealer would have paid me.

I know it's chalk and cheese, but a friend in Oz just bought an immaculate, one owner, low klm, 2007 convertible Saab for the equivalent of 175,000 baht (A$7000) , but that car probably cost over $60,000 (1.5 mil baht) new, so the owner has dropped a bundle in 8 years.

Oh yeah no doubt.

At the end of the day I was curious as to the price of a second hand car, and it appears Aussie is by far the better option to buy one from some dodgy car dealer that can be found anywhere in the country. - Not going to happen....and the way Thais go in over their heads to "keep up with the Pornchits" they probably need to recover more money off a used vehicle than the rest of us to pay their debts.

Considering the prices of new cars I've seen I honestly thought a second hand car would be relatively easy to get cheap!

Not the case so I'll shop around when I get back next week, see what deals or bargains I can find and then tell the missus to walk everywhere...

Thanks for all the comments

Somehow Car and houses are the same, even if the owner needs money urgently, the price is crazy and fixed, no matter if it does not sell in years. in my Village got a guy with his mini bus [clapped out old Toyota 1984] trying to sell for past 7 years, last time used on road was 2011, of course no road tax since then, will not start, has no battery for 4 years, even when it did, starting was a bad point.... price is 65,000 baht !! he was offered 49,000 baht a couple of years ago - as is to take away- NO as price is 65,000 baht. !!

Yeah, like you say, we have 6 houses for sale in my village, one has been on sale for 6 years, but they won't bring their price down. Others are all trying to make a profit when there are new villages springing up like mushrooms with better houses at cheaper prices. Just can't understand their logic.

Unfortunately for buyers, second hand cars really hold their value here.

A couple of examples we sold a 4 door 11 year old Isuzu pickup 3.0 4wd with 450,000km on it for 260,000baht a few months ago.

Father in law just sold a 1988 or 89 mitsubishi galant in Ubon for about 30K baht - that thing must have had million km on it. ODmeter stopped working about a decade ago and numerous other bits had fallen off. It really was a shit box but still commanded that price because there were a few shiny bits left and it ran (sometimes).

Where's Clare? He's always getting advice, here's a chance for him to give some back, he also has second car that he may be willing to part with? But cheap is what you get when you buy cheap if you know what I mean? Doubt if he'd even sell either of his for that cheap, he has more into them then that.. Look at something like an older SEAT Cordoba as an example, can be had quite cheaply but are good cars, basically VW's but aren't widely known by the Thai's so they don't get a lot of attention and have some pretty low prices, I know VW"s well though so they were not a threat to me, may be a bit difficult to find a good service tech in your location though?

Another in the same VW family, myself like better as they are hatchbacks + also a good few Estates here, Skoda both the Fabia and the Octavia 2001 -2003 form 65 - 100,000 baht, even the diesel 1.9 SDi manual.

Myself have same VW family Audi A6, now very old, super car had it years, now a day cost 60 -100,000 baht.

Yeah and actually the new car to be considered plenty around and decent packages is the older VW Passats, they come fully appointed many of them including air bags and ABS with just small enough engines for fuel mileage, but large enough to get you along without much drama and won't over stress the engine for higher milages. Some nice one's around really cheap and usually owned by more middle class Thai's so better kept, but still the OP is going to have to come up a little on his budget to get into one.
