Criminal Court begins first hearing against Thaksin Shinawatra for allegedly insulting the Army

7-20-2015-11-28-25-AM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court this morning began the first hearing of a case in which the army chief charged the fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra for libel and national security threat.

The Army commander-in-chief Gen Udomdej Sitabutr brought criminal charges against Thaksin on May 26 over his interview to foreign media accusing the military coup staged by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) was backed by the Privy Council.

Unfounded accusations by the fugitive former were tantamount to breach Articles 112, 326 and 328 of the Criminal Code.

Appearing before the Criminal Court to testify was Maj-Gen Sarayut Kliunma, director of the Royal Thai Army’s Office of the Judge Advocate.

Taksin like libel law, during his regime he brought massive defamation suits against critical journalists

The juvenile tit for tat is the reason many see Thailand's laws as nothing more than a joke, where those with money get what they want, there is no such thing as proportional justice in Thailand, the past 12 months have been testimony to that. Money talks, the rich walk.. it really is that simple.

And they want a seat on the UN Security Council.

How does this stuff make it in to the press?

It's both embarrassing and ludicrous.

They'd sue Japan for WW2 if they could.

Bunch of cry-babies.

The same thing during the last 20 years. No political groups do something for change that, they wallow with these laws.....

Look, only poor protesters of all sides are convict and jail, their leaders walk free and have good health, Taksin is one of them, he always use his money to try to avoid jail or justice (remenber buiscit box with baht for judge....)

You've got a short memory, this is exactly how Thaksin has got countless people out of his way for decades. Good to see the tables being turned for once.

Why do people keep looking as if Thaksin wants to come back? Has he actually said he wanted to return and ru(i)n the country? Do you honestly believe that should he just walk back through the door like the long lost prodigal son, the streets and the country wouldn't be like Dantes Inferno?

Thaksin is simply shit stirring, turning up the heat and baiting the powers that be, you know, the ones who keep going on about Thaksin being a yesterdays man, but can't stop talking about him. Te very ones who have told the press to stop giving him the limelight, which is hilarious, as they can't heed their own demands !! cheesy.gifcheesy.gif

He's nothing more than a bogeyman used to maintain their control, if Thaksin were to have a heart attack and die tomorrow, do you seriously think that the Junta would suddenly hand over the country back to the people ?

Not a chance, all's that has changed is the snouts in the trough are now harder to spot in the jungle!

the courts going to do about it?

regards Worgeordie

Revoke his passport?

Oh yeah, been there done that.

Even Nixon got a full pardon from President Ford.

Us Confederates got a pardon from President Grant.

Some things are best left alone for the overall betterment of the country.

Good point.

I've been to Greece & liked it a lot.

For some reason though, I tend to favor countries where the cops can't find their backsides.

Thailand, Mexico and Argentina are my favorites....as long I'm getting paid in USD.

I was merely referring to the fact that he has used/uses libel/slander laws for years to silence his opposition ... I didn't make mention of him coming back anywhere.

I don't see Thaksin out of the picture however, in any way, shape or form, now or in the future ... this is not a man who has ever let things go, and I believe he is still quite desperate to get back in control once more, backed by a certain someone.

So....you didn't have authorization from the Privy Council? If not, don't you think that would have been wise? thumbsup.gif

By the way, what's the penalty for repeatedly lying to the public? whistling.gif

You don't remember? They decided at the last moment! No time to ask.... :)

Sticks and Stones .......... to you and me Haggis may be water of a duck's back. Here, saying something however innocuous that's perceived as a slight has real consequences, legal or otherwise.

The whole "face" and pretend kind manners is juvenile and very obviously so once you recognize it.

All sides indulge it - Thaksin most definitely did; as did Yingluck. Now they're on the receiving end.

The rich and connected get different special treatment under law in all the countries I know. Wrong but it is how it is. Thailand is one of the more extreme open examples.

According to Thai law -- anyone can be found guilty of defamation, even if what they said was true, if it "injures" the disgruntled, whiny party.

The country is in the middle of a drought, an economic downturn, it is absent a guiding document to run the country and upcoming election are still far in the future, but they still have time to level yet another charge against a man who will never set foot inside Thailand again and who will never be extradited.

What a colossal waste of time and effort.

Indeed we do. Especially his often repeated attacks on free speech, democracy and any who spoke out against him.

Excellent research. I wonder if all those new Shin fans who've sprang up on TVF will read these articles and thank you to? whistling.gif
