Mae Sai Visa Run Tip Offered & Question

Featured Replies

Hi, here is a tip and a question. We are two Americans. We flew into Chiang Mai and received a 30-day visa exemption. At the end of the 30 days, we extended it for 30 more days at the immigration office for 1900 Baht each. The day before this extension expired, we did a visa run to Mae Sai and re-entered Thailand on another 30-day visa exemption (in mid-July of 2015).

Question: Can we extend this second visa exemption at the immigration office in Chiang Mai for another 30 days for 1900 Baht each?

Tip: 3 of the 8 people in our minibus to Mae Sai were turned away by the Thai officials before they could cross into Myanmar. All three happened to be dressed the most like backpackers among the 8 of us. Dress up if you are doing a visa run to Mae Sae.

Thanks in advance for your replies to my question above.

You can get a 30 day extension of your entry.at immigration. The only restriction is that you can only get one per entry.

per entry via air?

per entry via air?

No sure what you are asking about.

The 30 day extension for a visa exempt entry can be applied for an entry done by land, sea or air.

I think that regardless of how you dress Mae Sai is now off as an option for an in-out visa exempt visa-run.

What I meant was since OP had extended from initial 30days visa exempt(Air)->extended at Imm->Land cross->Extend at imm, Can he still do land cross ?

Back to Back visa exempt entries are actively discouraged. Attempting to secure a third such entry at a land border might be unwise.

I kind of doubt the way they were dressed had much to do with it, this is Thailand.

More likely too many 30-day free stamps in their passports already.

Never have Problem Crossing in out there did yesterday again

I beg to disagree; while things have loosened up in the last twenty years or so, Thais are still very conscious of how people dress. They may tolerate more casual attire and will seldom voice disapproval, but that doesn't mean that a government official - an immigration officer, for instance - will look favourably for the foreigner on what might be a marginal decision.

Visa-exempt or activating a consulate issued visa ?

To answer your direct question: yes, you'll get a 30 day extension no problems at CM immigration.

But you will hit a wall if you try to do another visa exempt run again.

You may have gotten away with it once because (presumably) it was the first time you've done so, but you'll be refused an exit in Mae Sai next time you try to do what you're doing again.

Reality is since the crackdown post August 2013: Thai Immigration wants you to get a proper tourist visa, and you're not doing so. If you intend to stay longer than your 30 day extension, get to Vientiane and get a proper visa.

Hi everyone,

I have a non o 1 year marriage visa and I am just about to end my first 90 days slot. I was thinking of going out at Mae Sai and come back in the same day, (run).....my question is:

  • Am I going to get a 90 days entry?
I mean as if I would fly abroad and come back at BKK airport?

I was reading this forum and see that there is a mix of different reports. Some says that Mae Sai is not allowing Visa run anymore while some other says they just did one.

Thanks everyone in advance

with a valid one year multiple entry visa you will have no problem, at any border, to do a quick IN/OUT.

That's great to hear that, thanks a lot for the prompt response.
