You can do it but you have to have at least 15 days remaining on your entry to apply If you needed more time you can get a 30 day extension and still do it.

Bangkok is the only office that can approve the conversion to a 90 day non immigrant entry but has authorized a few nearby immigration offices to accept the application.

You will need to meet the financial requirements for an extension based upon retirement to apply.

Wrong

Extensions of stay can only be obtained by those who qualify and only in Thailand !

Ubonjoe has detailed how the required Non O visa conversion can be made.

A single entry non-o visa can also be obtained at a nearby embassy or consulate. No need to go to Australia for that.

ubonjoe ... if I come over on a 30 (free visa) can I get another (say) 10 days without a problem?

(thanking you in anticipation)

You can extend a 30 day visa exempt entry for 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht without a problem.

thanks; (cheaper to pay $45 in OZ for 60 days)

Be aware that the airline can reject you boarding if you don't have a visa or ticket out of Thailand within 30 days.
