US' TIP report has not affected fishermen: fishery association

SONGKHLA: -- The Songkhla Fishermen's Association said the US decision to keep Thailand at Tier 3 on its 2015 Trafficking in Persons Report does not have any significant impact on the fishing industry in the province.

Most fish and crustaceans caught are only sold in domestic markets and to neighbouring nations.

However, there are only 100 legal fishing vessels remaining at the pier and their landings are reportedly too small for overseas markets. Many seafood suppliers have been forced to procure certain types of fish from Phuket and other coastal provinces for export to Singapore and Malaysia.

Songkhla Fishermen's Association President Praporn Akeuru said he is more concerned about the number of fishing boats at sea than Thailand being kept at Tier 3 in the human trafficking report.

Several fishing vessels have remained moored since the crackdown on illegal fishing began. Only 10 per cent of the boats that supply seafood to Songkhla have been registered.

Huh?? Are they talking about the EU fishing industry yellow card or the US TIP tier 3 thingy?

Only 10% of the fishing boats that supply fish to Songkhla are registered!! So by my limited Maths!! That means 90% of boats in this area are not still registered ! So quite clearly the judgement hasn't had any effect ! and doesn't look like it's going to ! That sums up what the authorities monitoring this are up against

Some people are not knowledge or oberservent enough to see the massive truck heading straight at them on the highway. They end up contributing nothing futher to mankind of any use or reliability. But then this man may have been the best avaliable from the choices presented to be elected president, or did he inherit the job?

This is Thailand, he probably bought it.

So Thailand had already been poised to enforce the laws that had been ignored by the fishing industry before the EU and US started taking action? Pleeeeeeeeeez!

We keep slavery a local practice.

So we are not affected by the USA Tier Report.

Hard to argue with such logic. Best of luck to the Prayut regime to make any changes in the South.

Looks like for these people the TIP is just a money thing. Humans and their horrible treatment on Thai fishing boats is not really important to them. Only profit. Despicable !

Maybe when they cant sell their slave-fish they will open their ears ... but I doubt it, the ignorance has no limit here ...

Correct, as 240 Thai slave ships are still fishing in PNG, that's where 1,000 of the crews trafficked from Myanmar and elsewhere have gone, and presumably the authorities and Thai seafood conglomerates are hoping no-one will find them there.

Perfect system, LoS ignores the world and its regulations and every industry etc in the country ignores the govt, its regs and threats.
