Police to probe case of 39 Thais lured to fish in I'nesia
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Deputy national police chief General Ake Angsananont is looking into the case in which 39 Thais were illegally lured to work on fishing boats in Indonesia.

Ake yesterday presided over a meeting with related police agencies after 69 Thais were sent to the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta on July 29, and 39 of them were deemed to be human trafficking victims.

He said the 39 workers claimed they were told they would be working on fishing trawlers in Thai waters but were taken to Indonesia.

Arrest warrants were to be issued yesterday.

Thai authorities would help another batch of 13 Thais stranded in Indonesia to return home, Ake said.

Pavena Foundation for Children and Women chairwoman Pavena Hongsakul, who attended the meeting, said the 39 Thais - whose boss forged their seaman books - were arrested by Indonesian officials for intruding into Indonesian waters and detained in Pontianak City, west Kalimantan, for nearly six months.

She said the workers would sue the Labour Ministry for compensation, as they were not paid while working on the boats.

Are you sure this is the truth ?...Illegal fishing yes..

I've seen a lot about this "fishing slavery" in the news here lately.

The calling for sympathy tactic. The Thais will do anything to avoid admitting institutionalised human trafficking and slavery by a nexus of state officials, military and business owners.

Its a serious topic for sure. Good to see progress being made. But I wanted to point out the The Nation has used a nice little pun in the headline.

Good to see journalistic standards rising there.

It seems the shoe is on the other foot on this occasion....

It's not nice when you get treated like this. Funny, I don't remember them kicking up a hue and cry over the Cambodian and Burmese fishermen that are slaves on the Thai trawlers...

This might bring some needed attention to the plight of Burmese slaves who have been used on Thai fishing boats for how long? A decade? 20 years? 40 years? What has been done up to now? I guess Burma does not have much of a voice, or pigs like Than Shwe do not care. Hope this helps those poor folks trapped by the Thai monsters who are running and captaining those slave boats.

Run out of likes, This is very true...

....the pot calling the kettle black.....

...this is truly psycho.....

...as for Pavena...
