PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Over 500 Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) supporters in Oddar Meanchey province, including provincial and village-level leaders, defected last month to the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). Leaders cited their lack of confidence in the CNRP’s leadership and the party’s inability to resolve internal issues.

A leader of the group of defectors, 48-year-old Kaem Kosal, said: “I had supported the Sam Rainsy Party [sRP] since 1996 because I thought that this was the way to bring a genuine change in the country, but everything now, in reality, is very different because they [CNRP leaders] are poor leaders, there is nepotism in the party, and we have not done anything significant for local supporters.”

Mr. Kosal said more than 500 former CNRP supporters decided to defect to the ruling CPP because it was the only party that really takes care of their supporters and pays close attention to the issues facing local citizens.
