PHUKET: -- The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a severe weather warning for the South of Thailand, including Phuket and the Andaman region.

Heavy rain is forecast in upper and lower areas of the South until the end of this week, brought on by a low pressure trough that is currently moving across Myanmar.

The southwesterly wind, which is becoming stronger in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, will bring precipitation to the lower areas of the South during this time, reports state news agency NNT. (See story here.)

The forecast prompted the TMD to issue additional weather warnings extended to southern residents of Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket provinces, in effect from today (August 5) through Sunday (August 9).

The forecast for the area is very cloudy with fairly widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy rain. Heavy rainfall could potentially trigger flash floods in these provinces, said the warning.

All ships should proceed with caution and small boats in the Andaman Sea keep ashore during the period, as waves are expected to reach heights of up to three meters in the Andaman Sea.

Phuket and its surrounds will be subjected to southwesterly winds of up to 40kmh, while Krabi and the area to the south will have it slightly easier, with southwesterly winds of up to 35kmh. Wave heights in the Krabi area are expected to reach about two meters in height. (See weather forecast here.)
