At present I am on an O visa with extension based on retirement. I would like to extend soon based on marriage. Is this possible as the O visa is the same only the extension is changed. Thanks for any advice

The "o" visa has expired long ago what you are seeking is a change of reason for your extension of stay .

You can obtain an extension based on marriage if you can meet the requirements which differ according to your status

A. Foreign ladies married to a Thai

B. Foreign male married to Thai lady

C. A married foreign couple.

No you can not.

You can apply as dependent if the spouse has an extension of stay but that is a whole different clause.

You can change to an extension based upon marriage to a Thai when you next extension is due.

expect to be asked for a lot more paperwork and hoops to jump thru

here in Phuket u get ur 1 year extension ----same day

while an extension based on marriage takes a month ( while ur under consideration)

It's not really a "lot" more paperwork and I didn't jump through any hoops to get my current extension based on marriage.

The major downside for me is 2 trips to immigration (round trip is 250 Km)

FYI my "local" immigration office (Kap Choeng) is now issuing "under consideration" stamps and doing home visits for people applying for extensions based on retirement which also requires 2 trips to immigration. Not sure whether this applies to everyone or just selected individuals...I'll know more when I change back to retirement in December
