Do I need to show 20,000 baht when crossing in from Laos?

Featured Replies

Hi I'm on avisa run in Vientiane and want to know if they'll want to see 20k cash when I come back.

Anyone done it recently?

"in from Laos" -> to Thailand, so this thread is in the wrong forum.

Should be in the Thai visas, ... forum.

A quick guess:

generally you might be asked to show appropriate funds, where cash in Thai Baht would be easiest.

The 20000 Baht req. has been posted repeatedly in the forum.

Normally they do not ask to see the 20k baht. But you should be prepared to show financial proof if asked.

After like 10 Laos to Thailand border crossings in the last 5 years, i've never been asked for any evidence of income.

On the entry card, I always check that I have a comfortable salary, maybe this has also an importance for the officer ?
I think it's also about the way you look, if you're backpacker style with dreadlocks, they might be more inclined to ask you than if you're wearing a clean shirt...

But as UbonJoe said, be prepared for it.

Although i've never been checked, I always have at least 10 000 B in cash and credit cards, just in case...

I went about 6 weeks ago and took 20K and also bank book with me just in case, but I wasn't asked to show it.

I have never been asked to show the 20000b, but I always have it with me, just in case.

I have never been asked to show the 20000b, but I always have it with me, just in case.

I am always concerned with world travelers who are apprehensive about having to show less than $600.

Thanks Frank for your comments, I (thankfully) am not a dreadlocked backpacker type, and will have a clean shirt on.

The OP asked "anyone done it recently". When was the last time that got out of your chair behind your computer and crossed the border and entered Laos? What is the official definition of "financial proof" that immigration will accept?

Note that ubonjoe knows more about what is requested than anyone that has crossed the border, because he's the one that better represents the collective knowledge to help people on this forum, every day since a long time. Then If he does that from chair or a threadmill really doesn't matter.

Well Dave, my concern is that the apprehensive traveler will find himself destitute in some foreign land and have to rely on family, friends or even complete strangers to solve his financial problems for him. What is you concern, that I may hurt someone's feelings?

@wayned. As Ubonjoe has stated and i can say from experience that he has never steered me wrong when it came to any visa enquiry..They normally do not ask. I have done it 3 times, the most recent being last month and have never been asked to show 20000b. The official definition of financial proof would be 20000b. I have noticed that after your snide remark towards ubonjoe that you failed to answer the question posed by the OP.

I've never been asked once but I keep it on me then just dump back in bank when I get home.

That 20k has 2 purposes for me -proof of supporting money and emergency money over-and-above my costs.

Better safe, than WORRY ! wai2.gif
