US investors have full confidence in Thailand: Prayut

BANGKOK: -- Investors from the United States have expressed their confidence in Thailand and are ready to invest in the country, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said.

This statement came after some 70 foreign investors from the US-Asean Business Council met Prayut at Government House Friday.

Those attending the meeting represented 29 US firms, including AIG, Caterpillar, Chevron, Cigna, Cisco, Citibank, Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, Ford Motor, General Electric, GSK, Google, MasterCard, Microsoft, Monsanto and Seagate.

After the meeting, Prayut said he expected to see more investment from these companies next year as they had been in contact with ministries and the Board of Investment.

As for concerns over Thailand's situation, Prayut denied there were any, especially in terms of political developments as this group already had other investments in the country.

The key issue is to ease obstacles to trade and investment for all countries, including the United States, the premier said, adding that some legal amendments had been made and one-stop centres established for quicker services and more convenience.

"Having investments requires capital and opportunities, which come after investors' confidence is boosted. Everything takes time. Businesses in energy, health and medicine fields are ready to invest," Prayut said, adding that he had told them to transfer knowledge to Thailand.

Really, Uncle Too, really?? These multinationals have already invested in Thailand so they don't worry about the political developments? I would have thought it was the opposite. In my muddied brain I would have thought that if they have invested heavily in a country then they would worry - a lot - about the political developments. But hey, that's just me.

Right then. Everything tickety-boo,

No aeroplane ban. No sanctions from TIP, and his good friend Obama will intercede to make sure the EU keeps buying Thai shrimp.

Next stop - Nobel Peace Prize./

And don't forget Ban Ki-Moon is due to end his term in the middle of next year. If all goes well, as it seems to be here, he could easily be elected to that post

I think it would be more credible if the US Investors said that, rather than Prayuth, who is known to be a bit... odd. Ooh, it's nearly time for his Friday night homily.

Oh goody.

I don't think that is the post which the good general is waiting for. There is another post currently occupied by a top general who became a political presence, much closer to home.

Anno Domini means that it will inevitably fall vacant relatively soon.

It doesn't involve anything silly like winning an election, and he won't have to leave Thailand or risk having to eat sandwiches!

Spot on - and he will be able to ensure that those presumptuous northerners, those demanding poor folks and - well anyone beyond the power group that called on his services last year - stay in their place thereafter.

As well as the U Turn on tourist visas, I can see the red light districts being 'rejuvenated' if the thai economy does slump - people need money, people pay money

we might see 60 baht to £1 next year - interest rate rise in the UK will only strengthen sterling more. Any other big shocks within Thailand ... put it this way it makes me nervous to invest in any big project right now

keep your capital in Yuan til october or sterling long term

I may have missed something, but which countries these days have a population of people with loads of cash?

BANGKOK: -- INVESTORS FROM the United States have expressed their confidence in Thailand and are ready to invest in the country, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said.

This statement came after some 70 foreign investors from the US-Asean Business Council (USABC) met Prayut at Government House yesterday.

Those attending the meeting represented 29 US firms, including AIG, Caterpillar, Chevron, Cigna, Cisco, Citibank, Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, Ford Motor, General Electric, GSK, Google, MasterCard, Microsoft, Monsanto and Seagate.

"Having investments requires capital and opportunities, which come after investors' confidence is boosted. Everything takes time. Businesses in energy, health and medicine fields are ready to invest," Prayut said, adding that he had told them to transfer knowledge to Thailand.

According to Deputy Government Spokesman Weerachon Sukhonthapatipak, Prayut highlighted Thailand's strengths, including the fact that it is an Asean hub for economic activities, and had policies and tax measures in place to promote the establishment of an international trading centre in the Kingdom.

Other strategic measures to put in place include legal amendments for the facilitation of trade and investment and promotion of US businesses via Public-Private Partnership.

USABC president Alexander Feldman said Thailand had the potential to grow in the future, and would reflect its progress in tackling human trafficking. Thailand is still in the lowest Tier 3 level of the latest US "Trafficking in Persons" report.

Meanwhile, Chevron's representative said the company would make long-term investments in Thailand, as well as hold social-responsibility activities.

The representative for MasterCard said the company was interested in Thailand's "digital economy", and called on the government for more support.

The representative for GSK said the firm was ready to help the government with its plan to turn the country into a healthcare hub. Automaker Ford Motor's representative called on the government to provide more support for skill development in the automobile industry, as well as invest in modern technology for car production.

Agriculture company Monsanto expressed an interest in turning Thailand into a "seed hub", given its perfect location for seed production.

Yeah, yeah, a month ago it was F* the US and their stupid BBQ, China is our new BFF. Now it's hooray for the good ole USA, and their capitalists, who will make us ALL rich!

All in the name of avoiding colonization, play one country off against the other. Worked great in the 19th century, which is why Thailand is so, well, cute! But they also avoided adopting any kind of mature legal system, and managed to build their own version of reality...

Now, reap the benes, Somchai...

I quite like 19th century Thailand, but it's not going to play well in the sticks much longer...at some point, Thailand will have to join the world, play by the rules, and elevate its people.

We can both hope and lament these developments.

So say I.
