Vietnam citizen: Thai visa options?

My travel buddy is Vietnamese. She was planning to get a 3-month Thai tourist visa in Saigon [Ho Chi Minh City]. Now, Saigon's Thai consulate says Vietnam citizens cannot do this.

So, can she get a 30-day exemption stamp then extend 30 days? If so, where's a good place in Thailand to pursue the extension procedure? Had major problems before, in Samui, trying to do that.

Then after leaving Thailand, she got a tourist visa in Penang, which cannot be done again, because rules have tightened.

What the consecrate dies not seem correct. As far as I know Vietnamese can get tourist visas.

She is not eligible for the 30 day extension because her 30 day entry is based upon a bilateral agreement.

... in addition the tourist Visa is for 60 days not 3 months... once the 60 days are up she might extend for further 30 days...

Exactly. We are baffled by this and unsure what to do now. Previously we understood it was entirely possible for her to get a tourist visa in Saigon.

She tried. Hanoi said she had a southern accent and so should just talk to Saigon.

That real nonsense for not talking to her about it.

Where are they going to get a visa at. Vietnam is on the list of countries that states they can only get visas in their home country.

I totally understand what you mean, sad to say...

I've been to Vietnam so many times, stayed there

for a long time, got local friends up there but all of

them are from Southern Vietnam. Most of them

are from Saigon and will never ever call it Ho Chi

Minh City. They unanimously don't like Hanoi or

Northern Vietnam, who don't like Southern Vietnam,

either. They don't like each other largely because

of the history even though they are Vietnamese...

So your Vietnamese buddy should go to The Thai

Embassy in Vientiane or the Consulate in Savanakhet

(where loads of Vietnamese live) in order to apply for

a 60-day tourist visa. The Vietnamese can get a visa-

exempt stamp that allows them to stay in Laos for

up to 30 days no problem!

Do you think she has any chance of getting a Thai tourist visa from a Phnom Penh travel agent? This has been easy for me [Aus/UK passport holder] in the past. Thanks for all your input by the way.

I don't think they will do one in PP either. They have almost zero useful info on their website so you would need to contact them to confirm..

no Visa for Vietnamese in Vientiane, Savannakhet or Phnom Penh.

and no 30day extension on that 30day visa exempt stamp, just 7days.

But they can do 2-3 visa run, each will give them a 30day stamp.

Vietnam and Cambodia will ONLY get any kind of visa for Thailand in their own country.

MY Cambodian gf is now back in her own country ( after being refused her non b visa in Penang)

I didn't know this... This may sound really strange but this is Vietnam,

sad to say...

The best bet would be to enter Thailand on a 30-day visa-exempt stamp

and do a border run once for another 30 days to stay in the kingdom for

a total of 60 days. I'm not sure if the Thai Immigration will let you do a

border run more than once now, though.
