From retirement extension to work permit

Featured Replies

I am a pensioner with annual extensions of stay, and have been offered a full-time position. Will the employer be able to obtain a work permit and relevant visa for me? When I resign from that position will I be able to return to an annual extension of stay, or will there be complications with Immigration?

Hopefully somebody will be able to assist with advice.

It is very unlikely you will get a work permit whilst on an extension of stay based on retirement.

With the correct paperwork (supplied by the employer) you should have no problem obtaining a relevant visa from outside Thailand.

When you cease work returning to an extension of stay should not be a problem but you may have to leave the country to obtain a non O visa.

You will most likely have to obtain a non immigrant B visa and then the work permit issued and extension made on that (assuming all legal with employment and a work permit can be issued). There should not be any problem once employment ends but new visa and extension for retirement will then be required.

why not apply for the extension of stay based on marriage, which allows also for a work permit ???

Thanks a lot for the prompt responses so far. Marriage is not applicable.

I believe that it will not be possible to get a work permit with a retirement extension of stay. Lopburi 3, will I be required to leave the country to obtain a non-immigrant B Visa or can it be changed over from an annual extension within Thailand?

Congrats on getting the job.

Others with experience may be able to answer better but believe a trip will be required as this is not a function of the office that issues work permits - but there are always exceptions to everything - even some offices that have issued work permits on retirement extensions. Best to be flexible.

Chances are you will be required to leave the country to get the B visa, i guess the thing you have to be careful of is that you will qualify for extension of stay with the job, ie they are paying you enough etc otherwise you will have gone from an extension of stay on the basis of retirement to having to visa run every 90 days if you dont qualify for the extension on the basis of employment

There are some work permit offices that will not accept an application if you have an extension of stay based upon retirement. If they will not accept it you would have leave and re-enter the country to get a visa exempt to apply for the work permit.

Once the work permit application is done and a application approval letter is issued you would then be able to get a non-b visa at a nearby embassy or consulate.

When your employment ends you can again get an extension for retirement.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

If he still qualifies - there is always a slight possibility of a change in requirements and if not in the system for retirement there would likely not be any grandfathering.

I have been in the same situation, retirement extension and then a job was offered.

I had to leave the country (I went to Laos, Savanaketh) to obtain a Non-B visa, after that I got my work permit in Thailand.

Half year ago (when I stopped working), I got a new retirement extension, no problems at all..

Thanks Chris. It would appear that the Non-B Visa will have to obtained outside Thailand. Were you able to get the new retirement extension without leaving Thailand?

I applied for the new retirement extension at my local Immigration office in Bangkok (Watana Division 1), without any problems' Just paid 1900 baht for it took 10 minutes.
