Transferring visa for a child - does he need to be there?

Featured Replies

Hi - I need to go to Chaeng Wattana to transfer the visa from my son's old passport to his new one. Does he need to be present for this?

Thanks.

Would it be possible to travel with both passports, with the visa in the old one?

Visas are never transferred.

Travel with both passports

NB

Are you sure it is a visa?

He has a non immigrant B visa + extension to stay.

Good to hear I can travel with both passports!

HA!

If he has an extension of stay the "visa" is likely to have expired.

He needs to transfer his stamps to the new PP and obtain a re entry permit !

Which stamps is he transferring - the extension? Do I have to go to Chaeng Wattana then?

It has to be done a CW.

How old is your son? If he is an adult he has to do it himself.

I was thinking of getting the re-entry at the airport as I've done before. Not possible with the old and new passports? Is the old and new passport thing only for tourist/short term visas?

He's 4. Does he have to be present?

Immigration will transfer detail of the extension of stay and of the visa which it arises from.

If you are in BKK CW is the only place this can be done.

I am uncertain as to whether it is possible for you to do this on your sons behalf

Do not forget the re entry permit!

Thanks - not to worry! If anyone has done it without having to bring their kid I would love to know. I don't relish being there for hours with a 4 year old.

How come that a four year old has a "B visa"

Non of my business just interested.

I am sure he had a non-o visa and got a dependent extension.

You don't have to take him with you.

It is the old story about the difference between "visas" and extensions of stay !

People really should make an effort to understand exactly what their passport contains!

...Is the old and new passport thing only for tourist/short term visas?

It is for any type of valid visa and valid re-entry permit.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Thanks for all the responses so far.

Do I have to get the re-entry permit at CW too? Or is it possible to just get the transfer of the extension stamp and get the re-entry at the airport (which is what we usually do). I got a Thai colleague to call immigration and they said I have to bring my son. So I don't want to wait longer for the re-entry application queue if I can help it.

I assume they failed to mention that the child is only 4.. That is not correct information that was given.

You can get the re-entry permit at the airport.

Hi - FYI this time I called 1111 myself and spoke to several different people, all of whom said I have to bring my 4 year old. Which is bloody annoying.
