melvinmelvin Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Am above 60. Am retired. Have rather massive university level education, several fields. Fancy doing smth of substance. Could fancy doing some teaching, fun for me, probably good for the students. One area where I could contribute significatly: (educating prospective master mariners): + Stability + Cargo handling + Ship manoeuvering + Radio communications + Mathematics, thermodynamics, physics + Terrestrial navigation + Celestial navigation + Maritime legal issues and insurance issues + Naval architecture other stuff: international law research methods for social sciences formal linguistics/languages For you in the know: Any point in approaching the relevant educational institutions or just a waste of time and effort?
doremifasol Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Since when your fun is a waste of time and effort? Go for it and Good Luck!!!!
allane Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 About 2002, I knew an American woman, working as a teacher in Bangkok, who told me that she was having trouble finding a man. Then, in the next breath, she told me that she had just accepted a job with the Royal Thai Navy. So, at least at that time, they did hire foreigners. I have had no contact with the woman since, and can't even recall her name.
aidenai Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 I read Thailand might be buying submarines. Just wait for that to happen.
Somtamnication Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 I read Thailand might be buying submarines. Just wait for that to happen. He does terrestrial navigation, not Titanic Commandeering courses.
melvinmelvin Posted August 16, 2015 Author Posted August 16, 2015 How much above 60? 3 (thanks to the others who replied above)
SheungWan Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 How much above 60? 3 (thanks to the others who replied above) If you are 63 then too close to 65 for an institution to want to invest time in setting up a job with limited shelf life IMHO. One exception would be for someone previously in a senior managerial position acting in an emeritus role setting up some academic project in Thailand but they would either still have the the status of a partner institution or a recognised authority in their subject area (publications). One long shot from where you are now would be to contact an appropriate university offering marine subjects in their curriculum and offer to teach some English with some marine context.

Appreciate that, thanks. And what you say does not surprise me. Can not help with a partner institution. Can supply quite a few scientific publications though, but not in fields I would enjoy teaching. I do not feel that I am ready to prepare for the scrapyard, yet. But this teaching idea is not crucial to me. I have taken up some old hobbies which give me a lot of practical challenges, but I miss intellectual challenges, to a certain degree. (I do not know this, but my feeling is that maritime subjects are not part of university portfolios in Thailand) I could not bring myself to teach English (with or without a maritime touch). My command of the English language is not adequate. I could do a course for bargirls or 7/11 employees but I could not bring myself to teach English in an educational institution. Anyway, next month I will meet with some government officials I know in the Thai Marine Department. Could always air the idea with them.
bangmai Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Students study "Ports Management" in KL and Singapore. Might be worth a look there.
melvinmelvin Posted August 17, 2015 Author Posted August 17, 2015 Students study "Ports Management" in KL and Singapore. Might be worth a look there. Thank you for that. But as I said, a job in teaching is not crucial to me. Its more that I look for some intellectual challenges, teaching in BKK could be a possibility. I like Singapore but am quite happy here in Bangkok and immediate surroundings.

SET is getting pretty cheap, yields are good. I trade a lot in America, but it's for night owls. Jobs, as you described, outside of teaching, would more than likely be for multi-national companies, and those persons would be hired from abroad.

If it is the case that there is a need for certain specialist maritime subjects to be offered either in a university or professional institution which are currently not being offered and you are in a position to offer your services and direct/advise the establishment of such an operation then your age is no longer an issue, your status is. I would guess that you may know the procedures for getting eg international accreditation for maritime qualifications delivered? If you can suggest deliverables like this then the government officials maybe more than interested. Worth a punt.
melvinmelvin Posted August 20, 2015 Author Posted August 20, 2015 Thanks for that. Yes, am quite familiar with those procedures, they are fairly similar all over the world. Have met these people in the Marine Dept before, they know I am well qualified. Will air it with them and see what their reaction is.
