What kind of "Visa" do you have ?

A- a Visa obtained at an Embassy or Consulate outside of Thailand ? If so, how many entries does it have, and what is the "Enter before date"

B- an extension of stay obtained at a local Immigration office in Thailand ? If so, what is the expiry date ? And did you get a Re-Entry Permit?

It's not an extension of stay, the document stapled into the passport clearly says this and informs me that I must notify my address again on xx/11/2558.

It was obtained at my local immigration office after I acquired an extension of stay in Vientiane.

The expirey date appears to be xx July 2016.

Both dates are as I've typed them, other than the xx.

You are on extension of stay that expires xx July 2016.

The document stapled into the passport is a notification when you have to do your 90-day report.

If leaving the country you must get a re-entry permit, 1000 baht for single or 3800 for multiple re-entry.

The document stapled into the passport is very unlikely to be a "Visa" or an extension of stay.It is most likely a receipt for a 90 day report/notification of the date of the next 90 day report.

Any "visa" , extension of stay or re entry permit will be found stuck or stamped on the page(s) of the passport.

Extensions of stay cannot be obtained from outside Thailand.

I would suggest examining the pages of your passport, carefully, in order to determin exactly what you have.

There is no such thing as a marriage visa.

As already advised you need to carefully read what is stamped in your passport

then come back and receive appropriate advice

I got a non immigrant o type multi entry based on my marriage to a thai national from the Thai embassy in London. Is this equivalent to the extension to stay you get from the local immigration office? With this one I have to leave the country every 3 months. Can I report to immigration instead? Can the one I have be converted if t are different? Can I get a yellow tabien ban using the visa I have now?

With your visa you have to leave every 90 day, there is no option to report. You cannot convert it but you could apply for an extension of stay based on marriage (or retirement if over 50), apply during the last 30 days of your current entry. Yes, you can get a yellow book with your current visa.

No ! There is no comparison. An extension of stay based on marriage allows a one year stay (renewable) and 90 day reports. However to secure the extension requires among other things , 400,000 Bht in a Thai bank or a certified income of 40,000 Bht/month

Thanks I understand now, the important thing for me is to get the yellow tabien ban as I have to leave Thailand on a regular basis anyway so not much advantage in converting right now.

Not my business but what value/advantage do you believe the yellow tabien ban will provide?

Main thing would be that I never need my embassy to prove my address, they charge nearly 4000 baht for that service, I can get this for free theoretically.
