With Tesco's campaign to stop providing plastic bags, has anyone had experience of trying to provide their own bags to be filled?

They tried charging 10c a plastic bag in AU a few years back and provided reusable cloth type bags for $1 each in supermarkets, there was a take up of it around 30% but it died a natural death now days next to no one bothers and plastic is once again king.

Big supermarkets in Malaysia started this a few years ago, and from the way it was handled by the cashiers it seemed more of a ploy to get you to buy cloth bags than a way to preserve the planet. Pain in the arse because when you decide to pick up something on the way home and you didn't think to put a cloth bag in your pocket when you went out that day...

In Fiji, about 8 years ago, the shops used decomposing plastic bags, they lasted about a month then would crumble. I figured it out when a bag of rice turned into a mound of rice in my pantry. If it hasn't caught on by now I guess there is a reason or two why.
