BANGKOK: -- Free television channels now broadcasted on analog system will go off the air within the next three years with ThaiPBS channel beginning the process in phases end of this year.

The agreement to end the analog broadcast was reached at the meeting between four broadcasters and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) yesterday.

The four broadcasters are Thai PBS Channel, the Royal Thai Army Radio and Television Channel 5, the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand (NBT), Modernine TV.

They agreed to terminate their analog signals by 2018.

The four broadcasters agreed to completely stop the broadcasting of its analog TV by 2018, with Thai PBS stating that it will initiate the process later this year in Ubon Ratchathani, Chiang Mai and Surat Thani.

Channel 5 will begin to phase out its analog broadcasting system from 2017 onward.

NBT and Modern 9 TV will go off the air of their analog signals in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

The blackout of analog broadcast for both NBT and Modern 9 TV will be done all at once, rather than using the phasing out to be applied by Thai PBS and Channel 5.

The four broadcasters also said they will take into consideration the readiness of its audience in each area for the new digital broadcasting system before proceeding with the termination of their analog signals.
