Windows 10: The Spy Edition

Windows 10 should be renamed Windows 1984 as that is the true nature of the operating system.

Windows 10 was released a short while ago with millions having downloaded it already. It is being lauded as the most widely adopted Windows at launch. Windows 10 is free for the first year, even for pirated editions of Windows so that even people with illegal versions of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 can use Windows 10

They do seem very keen for us to get it free and I am no computer whizzo but suspect its something I can well do without, so I will not be accepting the offer.

I use windows 10 for a few months as insider. To get rid of intrusive parts of this new program I had already done a good half of your recommendations in groping. Removing Cortana and all permissions that allows MS to choose for me.

I also got rid of Bing and most tools and gadgets MS such as the location.

Your very precise message will allow me to finish this work.

Thank you

I'm one who downloaded and installed the "free" version on windows 10..... implied in that was that I had a month to remove it. if I did not like windows 10.

Is that possible to do that , and if so can I get windows 8.1 restored without buying another windows 8.1 version and installing it and removing windows 10.

Only use windoze for audio production and video editing now, always have network capabilities disabled.

Use Linux now for any interweb stuff, couldn't be happier.

Does win 10 pass the hash?

YES I did just that, there is an option to restore previous version of windows.

Happy to take the upgrade for 10 from Windows 8. Ye gods, that was terrible.

I'm reluctant to upgrade my main computer from 7 to 10. No additional benefits from 7. I heard the new browser was faster and better, but not impressed.

I posted in another thread that while installing I encountered a stop screen which wanted to default to "recommended" settings but also had a small "advanced" button below it. When I clicked on advanced it opened another screen that enabled me to disallow a whole bunch of stuff. It was all related to privacy settings, tracking, etc.

For a long time Windows and others have allowed us to agree to EULA's and other things without us having to read them, which may have lulled us into complacency. We just click agree. This is one time a person doesn't want to do that.

Cheers.

Actually it seems that even if you do turn everything off, Microsoft is still extracting some data from Windows 10.

Whether its purpose is benign or sinister is another story.

No doubt the answer will be apparent soon enough.

Again, the most important thing seems to be back up, back up and back up.

I've got my Windows 7 backed up with all applications I need and they're a lot, by using Acronis 2015, a great software.

Same goes for the Windows 7 Version right after all installations, where everything was functioning well.

I even saved two school computers on an external hard rive. If anything goes wrong, I can use a CD to make an emergency start up to use Acronis.

It only takes between 40 and 60 minutes, depending on the file size to get the system back how I want it.

It's worth to invest in such a program it saved me a lot of time and money.

Acronis even comes with a clone option, so you can clone a hard drive, the same size your laptop, or PC's using, if something goes wrong you only have to put in the cloned version and all is how it was before. Each file and folder, each program and application where it was before.

The OP is quite right with his topic. I switched on a calendar and all in a sudden saw hundreds of peoples' birthdays. Even from people I've already deleted a long time ago.

Big Brother is watching you. Of course will Interpol & Co. have all access to such files, I'm certain.

There is fix for that I will post later.

You edit hosts file and ban all microsoft domains.

Might be a bit counterproductive if you block Windows and Office updates.

All that means is the default behaviour is to sync Windows calendar with your other Microsoft accounts.

Same goes for Contacts.

You can turn it off.

And you obviously haven't deleted them everywhere.

How is this "automatic"?

If someone is using something like SpyBot, it will bugger up their immunisation/existing hosts file.

Spybot should not edit hosts but use its own file. If it does thats not good at all
