Can I bring more than 1 liter of booze and pay a duty?

There is (at least officially) no means of paying duty on over-limit booze or baccy.

You could try declaring at the Red Channel and see what they say (what sort of quantity are you thinking of?). The worst that could happen there is they confiscate the over-limit, there are reports of "duty" payments or even being waved through. Worth the risk? Up2U.

Walking through Green (smuggling) would be unwise, customs regularly decide to do spot checks by x-ray and if caught you're in for a world of hurt. There are also spot checks land-side so even when you're heading for the taxi you are not home-free.

It's a liquor that isn't available in Thailand but is back home. I'd like to bring 4 liters.

The customs are also behind the doors so if one starts jumping of joy that he made it through they still would see it. (and probably still let him/her get him back).

You have to find more people who are willing to help you. 1 litre a person is allowed.

Would i help you? No way, i would never ever bring something through customs for a person i don't know.

Don't know about booze, and 4L might be pushing it, but I sometimes bring in more than the cigar allowance, Always declare them at the red channel and always been waved through. Try it with 2L for the first trip and see how it goes at the red channel.

One of the functions of the 'Red Channel' is to declare goods over your duty free allowance that you wish to import into the country. Customs should asses the duty payable and on paying the duty, you are free to import the items. Unless an item is in a banned or restricted category.

There was a thread about this before, but I can not find it.

In that thread an Italian said that he declared wine that he brought - it got confiscated "because he did not have an import license".

That sounds right.

I have asked customs officials at Swampy twice if I can bring more than one bottle and pay.

Have been to the customs office at Swampy, talking with people with heaps of gold on their shirts.

They said very firmly, no, you can not.

Only 1 bottle, period.

If you want to bring more you need an import licence from some ministry, cant remember which.

However, they said that it would be easy to get a licence for import of some bottles for personal use.

(I never bothered to try getting a licence though.)

Even doing mail order cigars, you can't assume that you can just go to customs and pay a fee (if they get nabbed). You need an Excise Permit to import cigars, obtained beforehand. I think with one extra bottle, you have a decent chance of paying them a 500 or just getting waved, through. I've heard of them coming down hard on people with extra cigs...like 500 USD per carton.

I had a Litre of Spirits bought in from Japan, asked the customs guy if I could buy an extra litre in Bkk airport before entering customs, of course it's above the limit, but I asked and he said ok, the girl selling said buy 2 Litres it wont matter, but I stuck to the one thanked the guy on my way through the green channel.

I had six 500ml cans of Thai beer and took them to Japan for a friend, was charged duty at Narita Airport, the princely sum of 100 Yen, about 28 Baht. smile.png

Bought Japanese Beer back to Thailand same 6 x 500ml as well as a litre of spirits, told the CO what I had, no problem, waved me through. depends who you ask and their mood I guess, but if you are caught trying to bring stuff in without telling them, it will probably be a different story, then you are taking the pizz.

Interesting. In Arizona. there is Duty Free for walkers entering Mexico. The limits were the same (1 liter or 1 carton of cigs), and it was also suppose to be only once ever thirty days. People knew when the shift changes were and would do it twice per day. The only time I ever had a problem, was with a 6 pack of Heineken (2.50 usd), and the guy is telling me I can only bring in 3 bottles (355 ml each). I just turned around and went back into Mexico and drank them. 12 USD for a Carton of Marlboros....incredible, and 6 USD for a liter of Jim Beam.

This week i read a story about a chinese woman flying to China with a stopover in Beijing. She had a litre of XO cognac with her, taxfree.

At beijing airport during her stopover she got caught for having the cognac, think it was too much or so.

Then she got really angry and drank the whole bottle in one sip.

After that she was found rolling on the floor and very drunk. She couldn't fly anymore and was refused to board.
