PHUKET: -- “Hotel operators must learn to handle the emergencies effectively to ensure the safety of everyone in their area. Tourism businesses such as hotels and resorts can take care their guests and clients, and local people, before local officials can get to them,” Gov Nisit said yesterday (August 25).

“Natural disasters can happen at any time on the island and have the potential to become more and more violent. The direct impact from a natural disaster is to life and assets, but the indirect impact from the damage would be the loss of economy, natural resources and environment.”

Gov Nisit’s message was delivered to attendees at a seminar at the Royal Phuket City Hotel organised by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Phuket office (DDPM-Phuket).

The seminar covered basic knowledge about earthquakes and tsunamis, evacuation procedures and safety guidelines during emergencies.

“I believed that this seminar will benefit many people, not just those in attendance today,” Gov Nisit said.

DDPM-Phuket chief Santhawat Reulerng added, “The more people who know what to do in an emergency, and know the evacuation procedures in case of an earthquake or tsunami, the less damage to life and other assets we will have to deal with after the disaster.”
