sanuk21
My optician in Phuket Town, who I have the utmost respect for, recently had cataracts removed from both eyes. He recommended the performing ophthalmologist Dr Jutamanee to me. He consults at both Vachira and Bangkok Phuket. Sanuk
Hugh Geen
I have macular degeneration of my left eye requiring anti vascular endothelium treatment. Dr Buddha the ophthalmologist and retina specialist at Bangkok Hospital is very good and my sight has been partially restored. It is pretty expensive. Knows his stuff ... but expensive.

I would recommend that you change your appointment to Dr. Sinchai ( same Bangkok Phuket eye unit ) he has been treating me for some years now and carried out a double intraocular lens replacement on me a couple of years ago. I once had to see Dr Captain when Sinchai was not available and I found his attitude more commercial than medical, he had never seen me before and all he was concerned with was that I needed cataract surgery right away, which I refused and on my next visit to Sinchai I asked him if I had any cateract problems and he said yes I had a slight cataract problem in one eye and would probably need surgery sometime in the future. I never did need the cataract surgery as I had the lens replacement a while later. I found Captain a bit flash and Sinchai definitely much more steady and reliable. Good luck whoever you go with. Interesting .... Yes, I would agree that Dr Captain (Kaptain) is very commercially minded. But that is the ethos of the entire Bangkok Hospital. Extract the most money possible. On many occasions Dr Kaptain has mentioned extra (expensive) tests. I just give him a hard eye and he always quickly backs off. Too be very honest I hate going to the Bangkok hospital, I always question all the extras on the final bill, and even the accounting staff cannot explain all the extras. They bill for everthing possible.

Lovely lady, spent a lot of time explaining my problems, didn't press for expensive treatment instead recommended close monitoring of the condition. You are of course spot on LIK I scrutinise my bills thoroughly and insist on an explanation for anything I don't understand, they don't like it but they don't get paid until I am satisfied, and yes I know it can still be expensive and I just came across the privilege card last visit ( a couple of weeks ago) and I have been going there on a regular basis for more than 8 Years anyone who is resident in Phuket can obtain a privilege card, on production of your Passport and visa extension with copies, which entitles you to 50% discount on inpatient charges and 20% discount on inpatient medications + 15% discount on outpatient medications. I hope I never have to make use of them but if you do they are substantial discounts.I never buy my medication there as they charge way over the top and in some cases some of my medications are up to 80% cheaper where I source mine than in Bangkok Phuket hospital. The bottom line is LIK we are Farangs in Thailand and sad as it is we are considered millionaires and open to abuse on every bill hospital, restaurant or wherever, diligence is the constant order of the day unfortunately, sad but a fact of life of where we have decided to spend our twilight years.
