The country areas on Asia are beautiful but in Australia they are terrible crime riden places 

 

Are you a city boy or country boy OR please don't discriminate and add a beach boy or islands boy

not sure why anyone would stay in a big concrete jungle once they've retired.

big cities are mostly factories.

ok to pop in for restaurants, shopping, but not to live permanently once you no longer need to

 

I'm definitely more country oriented....I was raised in a small community about 15 miles away from a large city & have kept the same pattern ever since.... Usually within a half hour/hour drive to a city....

Close enough for convenience & far enough away to be away from it.

..I generally don't like cities....

Some of us want to live in the city.

I live in a condominium high up, no mosquitos, snakes, rats and whatever there is on the ground in the villages.

I have lots of restaurants, bars, and supermarkets in walking distance. A fresh market 10min away with the bike.

World class hospitals - in case I need them.

Everything is nearby.

We even have some parks. And if I want to see more nature or the beach, I can take a day trip or more to go there.

A couple posts ago you said you were in the Philippines last year. So you're back now? But a few posts before that, you said you were in Pattaya, and a few before that, you were mopping floors in Australia. I wish I could travel on such a salary.

 

Like visiting, and usually something going on, but couldn't live in any city, and I'm not neighbor friendly. 

 

Nor care for the smells, exhaust, sewers, trash.  Pass on the roaming rats, and stepping over the roaches at night.

I was born and raised in London, but feel that if it had happened in the countryside I wouldn't have wanted to step foot in a city. I suppose a compromise for me would be living in a small town next to the sea. That would be my ideal. Instead, I'm stuck in Issan. Sometimes, life sucks. (note to those who will now comment that I could move: That is not an option.)

Get where you coming from. Was in Casino in March and being "The Beef Capital of Australia", really looking forward to an eye of Augus fillet. However the local Gen-Zeeders had kicked off big time at the wake of four of their own who were killed in a Police car chase over a major drugs bust. Local BiB closed all the pubs / Hotels / Resturants in order to contain the ruckus. Missed my steak I've been pining for all year. Turns out Casino is a major drugs town in NSW. Who'd have thought. Times change.

We all have different and quite diverse growing up locations. I was born and grew up 650 Km from nearest city, small town 300,000 people, desert environment, never cold, in summer most days around 45 degrees, very low rainfall, some years none at all, a wet year 20 minutes of rain (never heavy) three time in my life from birth to 21 years old didn't rain for 3 years, only one industry mining, many pubs (miners are drinkers), no entertainment except for Saturday night outdoor old movies once a month. 

 

At 21 had to move to big city to report for compulsory national service. First time ever on a train.

What do you do to have some contrasts in life? What makes you feel you doing something different? 

 

Being a country boy who loves travel frequently to bangkok for a few days, live in luxury  for a few days and off to a paradise Island for a week in a beach bungalow, before back to reality in Isaan. 

 

Live is all about contrasts

I'm a city boy all the way.  NY, LA, SF, HNL, BKK and now Jomtien.  As you can probably surmise, Jomtien is a big comedown for me.  Finances dictate that I stay here for the time being, so be it.

Any improvement in that area of my life will mean a quick exit from this boring burg.  I don't think I could ever live in the country, anywhere.  A few days is great, just like an island beach, but get me back to my high rise condo where I feel most at home.

Raised in the multiethnic Philadelphia metropolitan area. Drive the highway and the sign reads “leaving …”, close by is the sign saying, “entering … “, virtually no break in the houses, buildings. OK … college in Western Kentucky, never mind the culture shock of moving to the agricultural middle of the county culture shock. I lived in the 3rd (now 4th) largest city in Kentucky. Including the county, afterall we Americans oft live outside the city and drive in. I had 18.4 acres about 9 miles out of town. Lake, woods, deer, raccoons, coyotes, etc. Loved it. Retiring to Thailand … no Bangkok but on the fringe of Chiang Mai has met my needs (which include world class healthcare). Yea, yea smoke …

For me, life is about living comfortably, without stress, with enough variety.

Probably I have in the 2km around me more than 1,000 restaurants, bars, shops, cinemas, a couple of parks, and anything else.

I guess up country people don't have so much variety 100km around them.

 

Long time ago, when I lived in a cold country far away, I made holiday in warm countries. And then I made holiday in Thailand, and I liked it a lot, and then I moved to Thailand. Since then, I didn't go on holiday anywhere else. I like it here; I am not looking for something different.

Some time ago I was sometimes on the weekend in Pattaya, maybe 2 or 3 hours on the beach, and then a little here and there. Apart from the beach there is nothing there which is not also available in Bangkok. The few times when I go up country with my gf maybe we go with the family to a lake or something like that. Ok, it's nice for half a day. And then the ants and mosquitos take over. Nothing for me.

And then I visited "home" again, a couple of years ago. Ok, I liked some of the food which I didn't eat for a long time. But all in all, nothing special over there which I like to see regularly.

For me, 100% of the time in Bangkok is just fine. I know that is not the same for everybody, and that is the nice thing, we can all do what we like.

No, there are many good doctors in Bangkok.

There are obviously also bad once, I guess that is not only a problem in Thailand.

I can't stand being out in the boonies. 

 

I grew up in the sticks, left them for good at 17 and never looked back.   I like the variety and convenience of big cities (I've lived in most of the larger US ones).  Currently, I live in a high-rise condo between Sukhumvit and Phetchaburi and would have it no other way.    The country is to visit (briefly), the suburbs are to go through (as quickly as possible).

I grew up on a 5000 hectare farm.

I love living in the city.

I am a suburban lover living in a large townhouse gated community with a backyard of grass, trees, bushes and flowers. Know all my neighbors, close to regional shopping amenities and hospitals, and mass transit going north into Metro Bangkok and South to river ports. Foreigners are almost non-existant which feeds the curiosity of local Thai people and their children.

Yes most country towns in Australia are no go , Moree ,Bourke, Alice Springs, Townsville and add many more
