"Until recently, unmarried foreigners supporting a Thai child who met the 400,000 baht annum financial requirements could apply for and extend a Non Immigrant Type O visa, however, this option is no longer available, and requires foreigners under 50 who wish to extend a non immigrant visa on a yearly basis to be legally married to a Thai national. The new changes, however, allow foreigners over 50 with a Thai child (acting as sponsor) to qualify for a dependency extension with no minimum financial requirements."

There have been no changes to the rules.

It is still possible for the legal parent of a Thai to get an extension of stay.

Yes. 400k or 40k a month.

We have yet so see any reports of anyone applying under the last sentence below.

(5) In the case of parents, the father or mother must maintain an average annual income of no less than Baht 40,000 per month throughout the year or must have deposited funds of no less than Baht 400,000 to cover expenses for one year.
In case the father of mother requests to be under maintenance of children, the age of father or mother must be 50 years of age or over.

Does anyone know a way around this one? I'm only making 32K, have a fam to support and going up the wall.

A Multi Entry Non Imm O Visa from Savanakhet Laos does not need any financial requirements.

Only trouble is I'm next door to Malaysia. Any suggestions for going that way?

Nope. Savanakhet is the only local Consulate that will issue based on having a Thai Wife or being the legal Father of Thai children.

There might be one or two others but will need cash in the bank.
