Proof of address and Visa Types

Hello All,

I am planning to move to Thailand in near the future (1 or 2 months). I am Australian and under 50 yr (so retirement visa not possible, yet)

I plan on renting an apartment/condo. One of the issues I have is providing proof of address to my banks (EU bank). My bank told me that when I move to Thailand I need to provide a "certificate of residency issued by a competent authority (administration or notary public)".

Has anyone have any experience with providing/obtaining such document or similar. Also which visa requirement would be required to receive such a document. With a tourist visa I doubt it would be possible to receive such an address, maybe Non immigrant "O-A", or a Non-immigrant "B" visa).

Many Thanks for any information or suggestions.

I'm french and I had the same demand from my french bank when I moved to Thailand on a retirement visa. I thought they wanted a "Certificate of residence" delivered by Immigration or Consular services that is a proof of address in Thailand but in fact what they were asking for was a "Certficate of Residence" delivered by the Revenue Department in order to be able to determine my tax status. If you stay in Thailand for more than 180 days/year you are considered as a taxable person in Thailand. To get a "Certificate of (Fiscal) residence" you'll have to contact the Revenue Department of your area of residence. The foreign bank needs it to know whether your investments are liable to taxes in your country or in Thailand (see the Taxation Convention between your country and Thailand for more information available on the Department of Revenue web site).

I attach a pdf of the certificate of residence delivered by the Department of Revenue.

You can google "thailand revenue department certificate of residence" for more info.

@cmsanuk: Many thanks for your response. It is good to know that it is possible to get issued a certificate of (fiscal) residence. Since you said you need to be here more than 180 days/year then I would need a retirement visa or work visa. Both of those I would not be able to get at the moment. But we be useful in the future.

With further research I have seen on the Thai immigration website that there is a Certificate of residency (TM18 form) and also found some threads on this forum (although a few years old) where people have applied and received this document, especially when apply for a drivers license. I think this certificate could be suitable for me at this time.

However it is not clear to me what the document requirements are to receive this TM18 certificate of residency. Some people on the forum have said that they have received it on a tourist visa and others have said they were refused it.

Because I am under 50 and not yet entitled to receive a retirement visa, I have been considering a Elite PE visa, which also allows me to stay long term, need to do 90 day reporting, but it is still a special tourist visa.

Can anyone have experience or advise what the currents documents would be to get this TM18 certificate of residency and if possible to receive with the Elite visa (or normal tourist visa, retirement visa).
