PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: -- Bo Nok community residents and artisanal fishermen planned to petition Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha today protesting a university project on the coastline of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

They said the ecological system of the unspoilt coastline could be threatened if the project is approved by the government.

Comprising of 300 residents and artisanal fishermen, they said the university project was the idea of the deputy governor who planned to propose the use of Chai Klong beach in Tambon Bo Nok of Muang district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province as the site of the university.

They demanded that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment declares the Chai Klong beach as a marine resource conservation areas and to ban bottom trawling for pinnidae shells saying it is the most destructive fishing that destroyed marine lives.

Mrs Kornuma Pongnou, an activist, said although having a university here would help to promote quality education to the local people, but construction on the site where marine resources are plentiful will have adverse impact on the quality of lives of the people and the artisanal fisheries.

She said the site is a watershed area on the beach and has rich mangrove forest which there had been several attempts in the past by local politicians and influential people to occupy and turned it into a prawn farm.

She said they did not protest the construction of the university but its location was inappropriate. They wanted it to be constructed on other appropriate location, she said.
