Places to find Southern Thai food in Pattaya?

Recently in Bangkok I had the pleasure of trying out the very excellent South Thailand restaurant there called Khua Kling Pak Sod (also the name of a dish). To me the food was better there than anything I ever had in Southern Thailand so now I want to eat Southern Thailand food more often.

http://www.bangkok.com/magazine/khua-kling.htm#promo

But living in Pattaya ... where if anywhere can I do that?

Yes I know a number of places have shrimp with sataw (stinky) beans dish and I order that sometimes here but what I'm really asking for is there any kind of restaurant here that specializes in Southern Thai food?

Street stalls and casual street restaurants included in the request.

A while back it was reported there was such a food court place at the outdoor food court at the Colisseum on Theprasit but I checked it out twice and could not locate such a place. Is it still there? If so, can someone provide a precise description of the location?

Anyway, thanks for any tips relevant to this topic.

BTW, when in Bangkok do yourself a favor and find (not so easy) the Khua Kling Pak Sod restaurant.

Chaiyapreuk 2 Road. Turn left off south-bound Sukhumwit and head towards the Sports stadium. About half way between Suk and the railway crossing, there's a small road that goes off to the right (just after the PEA office on the left). The restaurant on the east corner of that junction is a Southern specialist. Went there with the Mrs once and had my head blown off. She loved it even though she's Isaan, I'm not going back!!

I agree - a great restaurant that we use a lot. Do not be late it has all gone by 3 ish. A simple place but nice food. I think it will be shut 14 - 18 Oct because the owner is having a baby. Normally shut 15-16 each month. There is another one on Suk (going west ) before you get to Tesco South - it is near a car hire sign. About 200-300 metres before you get to the Tesco turn in.

Excuse me, JT. Does your second sentence say what it is that you want to convey? The topic interests me.

What I meant to convey was that the food at the South Thailand specialist Bangkok restaurant I went to was amazing (and now I want to eat more South Thailand food here even if not quite as amazing).

I don't fully understand the locations of the two places mentioned as I'm limited to baht buses.

The first one sounds like it's deep in the dark side.

The second one may be easier for me.

When you say Tesco South, do you mean the one at the intersection of Thepprasit and Sukhumwit.

If so, is the restaurant going towards Pattaya on Sukhumwit or going towards Na Jomtien?

Which side of the road ... beach side or dark side side?

Or if I've got that totally wrong, any other clues?

1. 400 m up Chaiyapruek 2 is hardly deepest Darkside even if you walk. 2. Up Chaiyapruek 1 turn left at Suk and 4-500 m before you get to the Tesco turn in. You must get a bike JTbiggrin.png

I'm not going to get a bike. EVER.

Walking in the dark side. Only mad dogs and Englishmen, I reckon.

Last time I'm checked I'm not an Englishman and I doubt they'd have me, but I have been known to do some very MAD things in pursuit of good food.

Maybe near here? https://goo.gl/maps/6uiU3R46Jir

That area has changed a lot since the street view car was there.

Thanks a lot for the effort and the pictures are nice but when I back up to the map view, I don't see the point on the map where it's supposed to be.

OK, I clicked around the pictures and I think I get the idea.

From Jomtien go down Thepprasit to Sukhumwit.

Then the restaurant will be towards Na Jomtien on the Pattaya beach side of Sukhumwit road.

Correct?

There are a two restaurants, or better to say stands, 3rd road, going from Pattaya Klang southern direction. Between Soi 15 and 19.

Signs are in Thai language only.

They are opened at day time, not sure if they are in the evening, though.

Right hand side, when going South,

Hope, I could help!

Do they a place to sit and eat or is it plastic bags to go only?

Plastic seats )

There used to be a very authentic southern Thai food restaurant, day time only. Going North on 3rd road from Klang. Left turn at the next traffic light in front of 7/11. A right turn and at the next left turn on your right hand side. It was closed since about 2 months and it reopened recently. No idea if it the new owner will still offer southern food, though. I'll try and report,

Wow. More leads than I thought there would be already. Years ago a Southern Thai guy told me there was a place on Jomtien Beach road that had south Thailand food but he was never able to explain to me where it was and not sure if it's still there.

Also some years ago I visited a dedicated South Thailand sit down restaurant on 3rd road near where the place with the BIG CHICKEN sign was located (now closed) while not hungry. The menu looked great and I vowed to return but when I went back not so much later, it had turned into only a coffee shop. Recalling the menu, they had very similar dishes to the place I loved in Bangkok (but a smaller menu). I guess there isn't that much of a market for this kind of food among tourists here. Obviously tourists visiting south Thailand would be more interested, but this isn't south Thailand.

Good morning Jingthing

If you click on the place pointer / balloon (see picture 1) on the Google map provided by the link above, you should land on the map including the pointer (see picture 2).

Thanks for that. Yes that works.

But the location it shows is radically different than when I followed the pictures.

The location now shows it is Sukhumwit, dark side side, a bit north of Central Pattaya Road, between sois 49 and 51.

Is that correct?!?

Uh, this I don't know, sorry. Maybe KittenKong can give his approval / disapproval.

When in street view mode, if you click on the "back to map" link at the bottom right the map should return centred exactly on the point of view from when you were in street view view.

OK, it isnt easy to know exactly where the centre of the window is but using the pointer, as Andreas2 explained, should help. They should overlay cross-hairs, I suppose.

Holding your mouse still over the small map bottom left will cause it to double in size, and in this mode it is quite easy to see where you are. There is a pointer on that all the time, of course, and you can zoom the small window in and out and move the map background around to help verify your location.

All this is on a proper browser on a PC. If you are using a phone or tablet it may be completely different.

There is a large community of southerners in Pattaya and I recall that they do hold fairs at the school ground on the corner of South and 2nd Road or sometime at Wat Boon in Jomtien annually I think, their southern festival is on around the end of September, so keep an eye out for that.

Probably a good chance to taste the various southern restaurants that would have a stall at the fair and seek them out where they'd be normally

Ok, asked around and the Southern Festival is called Wan Sart Duen Sib , it's on the 12th of October this year, so if you see a temple fair around then, good chance there'll be lots of southern food stalls.

Maybe the city hall knows where the fair is held this year

Honestly, and sorry if I'm dense and slow, I am STILL not confident about where those two places first mentioned really are. The place on the dark side and the place on Sukhumwit.

If someone can be charitable and actually say exactly where they are based on the names of the roads and soi numbers, then I can look at a detailed map and locate the point.

I dont get it.

The points you are looking for are at the very centre of each map on the links that I posted, if you switch to map view. In street view they are also indicated by the pointer in the box bottom left of each page. In street view you also have a moving image that you can drag around to help you plot your way to/from known places visually. In map view, or in the little box bottom left, expand the maps by clicking on the "+" button and you have a very detailed view that is probably better than that given on most maps.

You should know by now that Thai addresses of the form 123/789 are totally meaningless to anyone other than those who live in the actual place. Even nearby neighbours dont understand Thai addresses.

Failing that, buy yourself a hand-held GPS device (or you can use a smartphone to do this for free) and get the GPS coordinates from the two links I posted. These are accurate to 50cm or so (thank you Uncle Sam) which should be good enough for anyone.

Thanks for being helpful. Sorry if I have annoyed you.

You give links and say these places might be near these points.

With only Thai signage and imprecise directions, it would really easy to go on a wild goose chase and never find the places.

I'm looking for confirmation from people who have actually been to these places.

Anyway, I think maybe I finally get the map directions, didn't before.

I wasn't asking for street addresses per se but locations of CROSS STREETS.

For the one on the dark side, this really looks far to walk but I got this location now:

Chaiyaphruek 2 road going away from Sukhumwit
east of Sukhumwit-Phatthaya 89
west of Tongklom Talman 8
Oops, now I read on the original description it's before the railway crossing and what I saw on the map was after the railway crossing.
For the other one on Sukhumwit:
A few blocks north of Central Pattaya Road
East side of Sukhumwit
Between Sukhumwit Pattaya 49 Alley and 51

I did a little bit sightseeing via Street View and have come to the following conclusions:

  1. Google Map is lying when switching from Street View to Map View using the balloon sign (at least in this case). It does not, when done as KittenKong described. But then you lose the balloon pointer.
  2. If the restaurant KittenKong is referring to is the "Unique Boutique", then it is definitively on Sukhumvit, about 50 m north of Sukhumvit-Pattaya 54, directly opposite Sukhumvitpattaya 85.
