BANGKOK: -- The level of the Chao Phraya river at the measurement point in Tambon Bang Luang of Chainat’s Sappaya district was measured at 16.74 metres as of Monday which was the highest recorded in the past 12 months.

Mr Aekkasith Sakdeethanakorn, director of Chao Phraya dam project, said Monday that the level of the river went up 24 centimetres in the past 24 hours to 16.74 metres from 16.4 metres above mean sea level on Sunday, making the level the highest in 12 months.

Meanwhile, the level of the river downstream the dam went up 2.7 metres to 8.6 metres from 5.9 metres prompting an adjustment of the amount of water released downstream from the dam.

Mr Aekkasith said that more water had to be discharged from the dam as a precaution in anticipation of more water inflows into the river. He pointed out that the quick increase of water level in the river can cause the river banks to collapse.

He warned residents living along the river banks to take precautions to prevent damages to their properties in case of bank erosions.

"more water had to be discharged from the dam as a precaution in anticipation of more water inflows into the river."

Meanwhile the rice farmers were told not to plant rice because of insufficient water supply?

It seems the government lacks a cohesive water management plan that is scientifically based and basically just following the plans begun by Yingluck.
