PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – A 12 per cent pay rise for civil servants that will take effect this coming January will be a step towards helping reduce corruption and “unofficial fees,” analysts said.

The raise was signed off on by the Finance Ministry earlier this week and announced yesterday. It applies to all civil servants, including those at commune- and village-level officials. Monthly salaries will rise 12 percent “from January 2016 for all civil servants,” the announcement said.

In addition to the rise in the basic salary, subnational civil servants who are paid less than 500,000 riel ($122) per month will be eligible for seniority bonuses ranging from 150,000 ($37) riel to 250,000 riel ($61), the announcement said. These bonuses will take effect next April, the announcement said. Other officials will see their seniority bonuses raised to 400,000 riel ($98) per month in January. The bonuses are paid annually.
