World must end poverty, inequality: PM tells UN

THAILAND and the other 192 members of the United Nations attending the General Assembly in New York have formally adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that sets new global goals over the next 15 years.

"The new agenda is a promise by leaders to all people everywhere. It is an agenda for people to end poverty in all its forms - an agenda for the planet, our common home," declared the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday as he officially opened the UN Sustainable Development Summit, that kicked off Friday and wraps up today. The new development goals aim to build on the work of the Millennium Development Goals, which was launched in September 2000 and rallied the world around a common 15-year agenda to tackle the indignity of poverty.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha joined an interactive dialogue summit session on ending poverty and hunger and addressed Thailand's approaches to sustainable development. He praised the new goals, saying the mission for the next 15 years was not only to eradicate poverty but to reduce inequality. "This is a major challenge for sustainable development. And all countries, large and small, must rise to the occasion to carry on the unfinished business of the MDGs," he said.

Prayut said his government aimed to create equal opportunity and access to natural resources because he did not want to leave anyone behind.

In a prepared speech the Thai premier, who came to power in the May 2014 coup that toppled an elected government, said: "We cannot allow the abuse of political power at the expense of the majority, which in the past has led to social discord and exploitation, injustice and corruption. These are root causes of conflict and division in Thai society today.

"The first priorities of my administration are to return happiness and harmony to Thai society, to reduce inequality, to render justice, to forge social cohesiveness and to rapidly redress economic and social troubles."

Thailand was moving forward to comprehensive reforms and the drafting of a new constitution that truly meets people's needs and demands, he said.

"Throughout these processes, we encourage all social sectors to participate fully and freely," Prayut said, adding that the government must be responsible in putting into place a proper framework and creating social equality so that everyone can have access to education, social healthcare, social welfare and legal protection. Thailand's development approach was inspired by His Majesty the King's sufficiency economy philosophy, which he said, had for decades successfully led our country on the path to all-inclusive and sustainable development.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Prayut visited an exhibition on the sufficiency economy philosophy organised by his government at the UN headquarters in New York. Prayut also met with the US-Asean Business Council at the Metropolitan Club to brief its members on the political and economic developments in Thailand as well as the road map for reform.

The government was fully committed to the road map and according to that plan a general election may happen in over a year, he said.

The government would make the most of the available time left to set up the groundwork for reform so the country becomes more internationalised and more competitive, he said. Basic infrastructure would be established on all fronts to provide flexibility for Thais and facilitate investment in Thailand, he said.

The government was prepared to tackle issues largely neglected over the years, such as human trafficking and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, he said

Really, what can one say, apart from Long Live the King.

It's so nice to hear that the general is going to give all of his money to the poor.

Or, his statements in the OP is what we call "lip service".

The problem with a sufficiency economy is who gets to decide what is sufficient. The haves telling the have not's to be happy with what they have, not to aspire to anything more.

Unless they disagree. Then they are not encouraged.

The end poverty propaganda has been used for decades yet we have poverty on the increase more talk its the same for famine yet we still have it. If this was Australia they would have placed a levy on the taxpayer.

This OP has obviously been edited!

As the the paragraph stating "The UN Secretary-General and all other members now understood and fully supported the Thai government", said the Thai representative to the UN, has been deleted.

How about the PM sets an example by sorting out the poverty and inequality in Thailand! Charity begins at home!

so he has well proven over the last, say 15 months, that he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but to say something so completely reflective of the military / elite basic political strategy and then claim that "we cannot allow" this to happen, is truly the height of (1) hypocrisy, (2) un(self)awareness, or (3) stupidity.

Personally, I tend to believe it is a combination of all three.

The richest people in the world talking about poverty, inequality.

Why don't the just say let them eat cake.

All I could say is that the Pope in New York had a simple menu of Boiled Lobster

One can't help but thinking PM Prayut - O that you have also abused the power entrusted in a Military commander by holding a Coup , the second in six years , one wonders sir if this trend continues what advantage to the ordinary Thai people will this have , probably none when is the constitution going to be altered in this or another charter to include that military interference in the Administration of any elected Government will lead to charges of mutiny , sedition to all commanders, also other countries have problems with elected governments , why is it that Thailand cannot introduce measures within the framework to overcome stalemates and the introduction of caretaker civilian governments instead of having military coups.coffee1.gif

World must end poverty, inequality: PM tells UN

What? Seriously, what? Our self appointed dictator who will not allow free speech or democratic elections, is lecturing the world on ending poverty and inequality?

Actions speak louder than words general. Set an example of how Thailand can end poverty and inequality here FIRST, before saying anything to anyone else.

World must end poverty, inequality

It's unbelievable that an unelected PM of a country riddled with poverty and inequality goes to the UN and preaches about ending poverty and inequality in the World. A hugely rich individual who is there only for the elite of Thailand. Why the UN has even invited a military junta to address them is a blight on the UN.

What does freely mean.. Think someone needs to explain what this word means.

As reported dutifully in The Nation.

I'm wondering if the PM will get even a mention in the international media during his visit to NYC. He's being suitably eclipsed by the heavyweights.

Perhaps another Flowers 'n Fawning session is in order.

Give me a break, General. It's precisely what you stand for. Be honest for once. You can't fool diplomats into buying your fairy tales.

I doubt United States England or EU will ever eliminate poverty ever.

I agree poverty must be eliminated. This a great idea I am surprised Obama never said this

The guy sounds like some 20 year old bimbo trying to win a beauty contest, saying "I believe we should have world peace....etc..."

The UN just stated no more poverty in 15 years.

The PM has an opportunity to state, Thailand will be the hub of ending poverty.

Time to unfollow this one i think.

This coming from the un-elected leader of a country where the social contract is essentially based on INEQUALITY.

What a doofus. I do feel sorry for him, and how he continues to embarrass Thailand.

He really needs to step down, there must be another general with at least a portion of a brain?
