Dams reduce water release, causes mass fish deaths

KHON KAEN, 2 October 2015 (NNT) - A sharp drop in oxygen levels in the water has killed hundreds of fish in aquaculture farms in Khon Kaen province.

Fish farmers were forced to use oxygen generators to keep their fish alive, as dam officials reduced the amount of water released. Low river flow has caused dissolved oxygen (DO) levels to decline.

Regional Environmental Office 10 said that samples taken from the Nampong Canal had only contained 1.8 mg/dL DO, far below the minimum 4 mg/dL.

Although DO levels vary in different parts of the canal, they are still insufficient to fish and other freshwater animals. Wirat Chanmuen, an aquaculture farmer from Ban Tok district, is asking authorities for help, as the Nan River is drying up and more fish are dying.

He said it was the first time in a decade that his aquaculture farm had been so significantly impacted by the drought crisis.

Can anyone point out the connection between Ban Tok district, Petchabun province and the Nan river which is many km away, and isn't drying up.................yet?

No planning, no thinking, no logic.

The rich and powerful want those below them to stay ignorant and submssive, so the former dumb down the education system for the latter.

I am reminded of the Green Day song "American Idiot" .... let us change a word.
