Concerning a Farang married couple, one gets retirement extension

Today my Canadian friend went in with his Australian wife.

Past 8 years she has gotten her extension based on the fact he is over 50 an has the 800,000 in the bank and they are legally married

Today he was told by the female immigration Volunteer here in Phuket, that she can ONLY get her extension based on his extension for 3 years?

Anyone else heard of this??
