NASA announces Asteroid 86666 will narrowly miss Earth when it passes by on weekend

Bet the Prepper nutcases in Oregon are all getting excited and hoping it hits

I have no bunker for such situations......Thanks for bringing that to my attention......Maybe 2 meter strong concrete wall buried 10 meter below ground level?

Errm... more than 90 meters above ground level, I would recommend.

Am I reading that right? Over 25 million km's away and they call it a near miss?

Who writes this crap?

You know what they call a near miss in airspace?

You know what is classified as a near miss in ball sports?

All relevant to the size of the field.

I know exactly what a near miss by an object in space is. The author of the OP obviously doesn't and seems to be confusing a Near Earth Object with a near miss.

Ok so what is it then ?

The defintion of a near miss is relative

on the scale of the solar system or universe it could be considered a near miss

Then the Moon is a constant near miss as it is about 60 times closer to the earth than the object in the OP if the reporting is correct. NASA considers a large object in space to have the potential to threaten earth if it comes within 4,000,000 miles which is a lot less than 25,000,000 km's reported in the OP.

Can't stop it, why worry about it. If it hits, then worry about it. Meanwhile those plebs in US that are building shelters, they will be out of the way for a while, much to the relief of the rest of us.

........25,000 or 25,000.000.........???

...is it in the Moon's orbit...384,400 km.....???

...otherwise why call it a 'near-miss'.....???

CRAP. I thought the end was near and spent all my money on beer and hookers, than wasted the rest.

Most male Farangs in Thailand do that....

I skip the beer and go straight for the hookers, especially when asteroids are nearly missing.

Ah good, I was looking for something to worry abbout.

I have spent the afternoon building a secret unground bunker in the garden in preparation and i plan to store all my urine in 2 l coke bottle for later purification

I do that on a normal day anyhow.Have you seen the price of Evian in the supermarkets?

Ah good, I was looking for something to worry abbout.

May I recommend downloading a nice feelgood movie such as "Melancholia" to assuage your fears.

All joking aside whenever I read stories such as there's a little part of me that's in panic mode until I read that it's safely past us.

Ok, sure. Can I pay you with 5 little bottles of my hair-growing tonic? Or how about 25 tin talismans which ward off ghosts - all blessed by a Thai head monk who drives a Mercedes.

So if you have a little joy at Nana while the wife is visiting family upcountry it is just a near miss. Got it.

I asked a taxi driver if he was worried and he said 'no' and pointed to the amulet around his neck.
