Hostility towards ladyboys? I don't think so. I treat them like I would any other mentally sick person such as an alcoholic/schizophrenic etc , hopefully with some degree of compassion.

I recall many years ago being at a Prathom school with a ladyboy teacher. I have known of others too. Under the "constitution" of 1997, which no longer counts, ladyboys can't be discriminated against.

I have no objection to a ladyboy teacher teaching my kids but a foreigner dating ladyboys doesn't seem right for some reason. Perhaps 30 years of meeting ladyboys in the fishmarket, nana plaza, the airport or wherever assuming that all farang want them has taken its toll in my subconscious.

Genuine question: What would you think the chances are that your kids were never taught by a teacher who had at least experimented with a ladyboy?

With 30 years experience you are probably ideally placed to offer some insight to the OP and the rest of us - have you ever worked at a school with a teacher that was known to have a penchant for ladyboys? If not, would that be because the school would not employ a teacher if they knew he had such a preference? If yes - what was the reaction of the school towards that teacher?

Most teachers I have known that have had experience with lbs have by mistake.

When my kids were young, ie around 1990, most schools would take ANY farang as a NEP. Things have changed a lot since then. i'm sure my kids have been taught by a teacher who has experimented with a lb. I'm sure my kids have been taught by a teacher who was an alcoholic/drug addict or some sexual deviancy. It was just the way it was back then in the TEFL business.

I've had many gay colleagues but none that were dating lbs. I know there is a big difference. gay is a normal sexual preference. Ladyboys are mentally sick, according to the medical experts. A teacher doing this in Thailand is frowned upon and they would be fired if they were a farang for sure.

Over a beer, he said something about some perverted German “Scheisse movies”, (I later found out that this was from a Southpark episode) and really commented on some German porn (Google it, most adults do watch porn, including my wife and me) and told me that he saw one where a man did something to the woman’s face. (Can’t go into details now.) But when I told him to finish his beer and I’d show him at least four Thai women, who do have such a not particularly mentioned preference, he was just staring at me.

You truly sound like the German Minister "Gauweiler", who was planning to build concentration camps for people who caught the HIV virus.

I think he must be under the influence. Now I know the reason he gets into problems, he's not a NES, he a German. Only a baan nok school in Isarn would hire one. It's the end of the line for drunks, non native speakers, mongers etc. They used to go to Khon Kaen and Udon but now they end up in Roi Et, Sakhon Nakon or Buriram.

The DSMIV and V are Diagnostic and Statistical manuals used in determining if a mental condition exists. It does not necessarily mean that the person is impaired, dangerous, unable to work or in any way a danger to themselves or others.

Many, many people fall within one or more category of the DSM and function well. Are you a collector of things? You might fall well within the diagnosis of Obsessive - Compulsive disorder.

Sexual deviations are of greater concern to many people because of the close association with children. These deviations are not infectious. Neither the teacher or students will catch them.

Thais, in spite of their tolerance, are very conservative and there is no way of predicting how they would react to someone dating a ladyboy. Actually dating a ladyboy might not be a big problem, but dating a lot of lady boys might. It's difficult to say.

I have met with complaining parents, who were concerned that the school had too many gay teachers. They couldn't give me a number of how many gay teachers would be acceptable. They couldn't even for sure identify who the gay teachers were, but they had heard from somebody who new somebody who was pretty sure that some teachers were gay.

I have been asked to fire a female teacher for drinking in the local market with several men. The problem was the lady didn't drink. She never touched alcohol, not even the occasional drink. She also had never been to the market in question.

We have had parents complain because we had Muslim teachers and they shouldn't be allowed to teach.

The parents and the Thai admin are a capricious lot and difficult to predict their reaction.

As a general rule, keep your personal life as personal as possible and if you are a good teacher and well liked, I have seen schools overlook a lot of behavior that would not be tolerated or accepted in the Western world.
