Police seek arrest warrants against nine instigators of Phuket riot
The Nation

PHUKET: -- Police are seeking arrest warrants for nine key instigators of the riot that took place at the Thalang Police Station in Phuket province.

"They are local, young people. Some of them have had records of drug abuses and alcohol consumption," Phuket police chief Pol Maj General Patchara Boonyasit said Tuesday.

Hundreds of people went on a rampage at the Thalang Police Station late Saturday night. The stoning and arson attacks went on until the wee hours of Sunday after two young drug suspects died in a crash during a police chase.

Some policemen were injured during the riot.

Patchara Tuesday emphasised that rioters who threw incendiary bombs at vehicles and rock at the police station's buildings would be brought to justice.

This riot appears to have gone beyond locals smashing and throwing things. Incendiary Bombs have to be made for the purpose of starting fires. These rioters made bombs not your average garden variety angry quick gathering mob.More like militants with actions premeditated. Just how well organised is the criminal element in Phuket? Seems they were ready to take on the police to demonstrate who is boss.

These bombs are available everywhere at the roadsides.

Exactly, buy glass bottle of petrol at any roadside stall, insert rag, and light. No preplan necessary.

Police say they have CCTV footage of rampage at Thalang station; some leaders had 'records of drug or alcohol use'

PHUKET: -- POLICE are seeking arrest warrants for nine key instigators of the riot at Thalang Police Station in Phuket.

"They are local, young people. Some of them have had records of drug abuse and alcohol consumption," Phuket police chief Pol Maj General Patchara Boonyasit said yesterday.

Hundreds of people went on the rampage at Thalang Police Station last Saturday night. The stoning and arson attacks went on until the wee hours of Sunday after two young drug suspects died in a crash during a police chase earlier in the day.

Some police were injured during the riot.

Patchara stressed yesterday that rioters who threw incendiary bombs at vehicles and rocks at police buildings would be brought to justice.

"We can identify almost all rioters who caused violence. There are recordings from a closed-circuit television system. There are both still and moving pictures," he said.

He added that a panel was set up to facilitate an investigation into the riots and it would be concluded within 30 days.

Interior Minister General Anupong Paochinda warned people who feel they are subject to unfair treatment by state officials against taking matters into their own hands, rather than letting the law run its course.

"If you violate laws, you will be seen as offenders - not victims," he said.

Anupong said Thais needed to learn that violence would not solve problems. "We need to respect laws. If any official is bad, take legal action against that official," he said.

Thalang Police superintendent Pol Colonel Chanucharn Chonsuwat said the morale of his staff had increased after senior police offered moral support.

Chanucharn said if possible, he would like to ask for understanding from the public. Like other sectors of society, he said the police force may have both good and bad members.

"Please don't stigmatise police. Single out bad policemen so that we can remove them for a better police force," he said.

Chanucharn was speaking as the force celebrated National Police Day.

At a ceremony in Bangkok, National Police Chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda encouraged police staff to continue doing good and right things. He said wayward staff would need to change their behaviour and comply with the law.

"We need to serve the people and win their trust," he said.

he is right, the correct message to send here is "you will not get away with this, you will be identified arrested and prosecuted" this sort of behavior needs a firm response that it will not be tolerated under any circumstance

^ I believe they did seek out and arrest the leaders of the Tuk Tuk road blocks in both Patong and Karon.

Some TV posters want to see this as a sign of 'Organized Crime' , when any thinking person knows that organized crime avoids the limelight at all costs ....

"...Police say they have CCTV footage of rampage at Thalang station.."

So what!

...and where is the video of the "accident" that killed two young men. I'm still waiting to read about this evidence they have that shows it was an accident. Even so, police are at least guilty of being so poorly trained as to engender people's lives in a chase for 50 stupid yaba pills. Accident or not, and I'm not convinced of that yet, the police have a huge amount of culpability in the death of these young men.

50 stupid Yaba pills that in the wrong hands could kill but hey seems you don't care. Police are not at fault here as has been seen as for rioting I suppose the police started that as well maybe they planted fire bombs in innocent by standers hands then forced them to throw them

Amazing how fast justice works when the boys in green are in power. thumbsup.gif

A 100,000 baht carrot for "bravery" I am sure had nothing to do with it. Again pick the low hanging fruit. Score points and move on. Again there was much more behind this riot than what was published.

I am in agreement the rioters should be brought to justice and made to pay for the damage caused or given jail time .

Have you ever tried to get blood out of a stone? Good luck on that one. You seem to talk like a Newbie? The following statement had me in tears (laughter) Law runs its course? Just try taking action against an official see where that gets you

We had the same riots for justice against the police here in Brixton in 81 and 83 and then some. The police do not have the right to murder young people. Drug use is a private matter and no business of the police.

" Drug use is a private matter and no business of the police."

Are you serious ?
