News just in from the locals...........

The initial announcement that the police were to stop all random police roadside checks, was ignored by CM police (big surprise).

But now a few of them have been removed to inactive posts.

Local discussions conclude, you get stopped, or see someone stopped, take a photo of the incident on your phone or car cam, and send it to the big man, and/or social media.

This is what the Thais are saying and doing, and strangely enough, the random blockades seem to have gone away ...... for now!

Question is....how are they going to make up for all this lost tea money ? Having Police in wife's family i know they cannot live the life they want on their wages and rely on these 'collections' to fund all their smoking, drinking, gambling and Mia Moi's. Can't believe they are just going to stop these activities and become 'pure' ! Reckon SME's will have to watch out as their 'protection' contributions are going to rise significantly.

But surely, from the Polices perspective, if the majority of motor cyclists in Chiang Mai continue to flout the law of the land by ignoring helmets, what are the police supposed to do, just ignore?!

This whole situation is nonsense on top of everything else going on, on this question of trying to apply the legislation I actually support the police in doing spot helmet checks!!

No one has said that police checks are over or that the law is not to be upheld!

What has been said is that RANDOM police checks are now over. Police check points can and will be set up but there must be a uniformed police inspector or above in charge and present at the scene.

Whether having a senior officer present and in charge will stop the 'tea money' or not is a different matter.

I too support the check for helmets, licenses, and road tax..

What I dont support is them continuing down the imaginary list.. Green book copy.. green book original.. House tabien baan copy.. Non standard (but still european stamp / marked road legal) exhaust.. Modified LED indicators.. Ohh you were in the wrong lane.. Ohh you changed lane back there.. Ohh lets keep inventing things until we find one..

Applying the law is one thing.. making up false offenses to demand money once they hold your DL in their hand is entirely another.

I too didnt believe the tabien baan one by my mate assured me they actually tried that recently.. after trying for copy of the green book.
