one has to question the reasons for this given that foreigners have no recourse to health care,social security or the likelihood of working and earning enough money to maintain a standard of living that is only viable by working away from the family home.

It's the ongoing problem Thai immigration have separating the wheat from the chaff. It's easy enough to separate out the 2 week tourists from the longstayers . . . . but how to separate a longstayer with a net economic benefit (money flowing inward from another country, high spender) from one with a net economic loss (taking a local job, committing crime or just getting by on a bare minimum) . . . that's the cut they've been trying to make for years.

As for farang husbands - from a short term economic perspective, it makes more sense to have them abroad, earning bigger money and sending it to their wives and children in Thailand, than having them here taking a Thai job. Yeah, maybe it's a kind of a heartless economic analysis.

Thailand is visited by Millions of genuine tourists every year.

I seriously doubt that the departure of a few who cannot find a legitimate means of remaining in Thailand full time will cause much anxiety.

Plenty, and with a collective earning and spending power that renders what retirement visa holders contribute pale in comparison. It's just a matter of time before the world wakes up to the fact that a growing number of people - including those over fifty - reject the traditional office/work environment for higher-paid, tax-free independent endeavours with less hours and stress, and no office politics and Christmas parties. It's as inevitable as night and day. Welcome to the 21st century. Oh, and many thanks to the moderators for deleting my original post to this comment. No double standards applied of course.

I spent at least 100k every month, 3mil on a house, we rented 2 condos, my son went to an international school, my daughter to a pre-school. I spent a small fortune on tourist visas in my time in Thailand because of the visa restrictions.

They really want to cut back on tourists , what about those going on somewhere else then coming back that way, or the young kids who decide on the spur of the moment they'll head back

Wrong about the Govt wanting to cut back on tourists. They know Farangs exploit the laws governing entry and stay. what the want is to make it harder for tourists to live here...not visit here.

Sorry to bring you the bad news Tracy, as a volunteer you need a Work Permit in Thailand and with this Work Permit you can apply for extension of stay so you do not need tourist visa's anyway.

I can easily afford the Elite visa but it can be scrapped anytime on a whim. That's how decisions are currently made in Thailand.

If you can easily afford it why are you concerned about the unlikely chance of it being scrapped. If it were scrapped the visa would be valid for it's duration. The only thing at risk are the benefits which aren't worth worrying about anyway. The 20 year plan requires the visa to be renewed every 5 years and if they did opt not to renew the visa and scrap the scheme the terms of the scheme require that you get a refund.

There are 10 times more Thai people in France right now (500.000) than there are French people in Thailand (50K).

I, nor any of the other foreigners that volunteer there have WPs, except for one Japanese woman whose husband is on a WP. Once again an inexperienced expat confusing his/her narrow experiences in a country with reality on the ground. I've lived away from my country of birth since I was 6 years old in numerous places, and as a result have witnessed this kind of pompous, presumptuous ignorance countless times.... and will no doubt continue to do so.

Astonishing that people like jacksom and Co are so actively interested in other peoples' visa status. I'm certainly not interested in his or anyone else's. I mean who really cares? Have they really got nothing better to channel their energies into? Evidently not. It's bordering on pathological. It's also worth noting that Mr jacksom has still not responded to my question regarding how much he contributes to the Thai economy, as he put it. Probably not much.

I can understand this..if they let all tourists stay with no checks and balances, it then becomes harder to clamp down on the down and outers...

Those who would stay here to the very end, living week on week, begging and borrowing until they end up balcony diving and/or having no money and needing hospitalisation.

The other basic arguments against long stayers all stem from the western concept of aliens becoming "bludgers" as they often migrate to Western countries just to become a draw on the generous welfare systems.

Thais dont have to fear farangs here and IMO they dont.

Why would they?..

We will never draw any welfare, own land, or even work alongside Thais on a level playing field.

All (most) foriegners do here is bring in money and spend it and give away a lot to people who would normally need some welfare off their own government.
