Uber: former driver convicted of rape in New Delhi

NEW DELHI: -- A court in India has convicted a former driver with US-based private hire company Uber of raping a woman passenger.

Shiv Kumar Yadav was found guilty of rape, kidnapping and criminal intimidation. He faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The woman passenger was raped and beaten after she hailed Yadav’s cab in New Delhi last December.

The attack sparked a nationwide debate in India about women’s safety.

The authorities in New Delhi banned Uber after the incident last year.

They said the company violated rules and failed to run proper background checks on its drivers.

Uber later resumed operation, having improved its safety procedures.

Lawyers for Yadav say they plan to appeal.

Nuts.

How is this about Uber?

What if a former McDonald's employee molested someone? Would it be about McDonald's?

Uber is disruptive, and IMO exploitive of drivers, and, as a company, just plain sleazy, but come on...this is just smear propaganda.

Complete waste of bandwidth.

But what if a McDonalds employee rapes a woman in the bathroom while he is at work? The taxidriver was working for Uber when the rape took place.

The real news here is that someone in India is going to jail for committing rape.

Uber isn't to blame for this. Taxi companies everywhere are scared to death of them, and try to bring their bad news into the light whenever they can't simply ban them from working. It's a ridiculous article. I would like to see statistics on taxi drivers in India committing rape.

if it happened while the employee is at work then possibly that location could bear some of the blame but would all mcdonalds be closed down? no of course not. stupid knee jerk reaction.

uber is a fantastic concept, employing thousands and providing cheaper transportation. in nz the transport minister applauded them for reducing the need for car ownership as people have a reliable alternative to buying a car. calling a taxi and maybe having them turn up half an hour later is not a viable alternative.

Agree that it's just anti-Uber smear. But, while it may be great for riders, Uber is poverty in an app for drivers, at least in most US markets. It's a giant automobile equity vacuum, relying on the lack of sophistication of people who can't figure the real cost of driving for them. After depreciation, insurance, maintenance, and gas, they make less than minimum wage, and have to pay 15% Social Security tax, regardless...

Travis Kalanick is an a-hole of the first order...but I digress.

The 'rape in the bathroom of McDonald's' analogy is so full of holes as to be ludicrous..

Glad to hear that rapists are being brought to justice, but Uber has absolutely nothing to do with it...
