I was driving today from Bo Phut (starting at the traffic light (which hasn't been working in about 2 months)) to Maenam. I'm sure everyone knows that they have been putting in drainage culverts. However, the cement that they laid over these culverts has caved in in many places making it very very dangerous especially at night for motorbikes. I hope it gets fixed fast.

So cha cha when driving through there. Plus there is a lot of sand on the road which, besides other drivers, is a serious threat to motorbikes.

The same kind of thing has been done at Lamai.

The problem here is the metal grates overing the drains. They fall into the following categories:

1. Perfect fit.

2. They are set too low and are not flush with the pavement.

3. They are set too high (often by several inches) and are not flush with the pavement.

4. They don't fit at all and are sort of tossed over the square opening.

It is amazing to see that something as simple as putting a grate over a drain hole can go so terribly wrong. Moreover, there are few warnings (such as a piece of wood or something sticking up). These are the causes of accidents waiting to happen.

One can assume that the local hospitals had a hand in the design of the drain grates....

The powers-that-be have also ordained that brickwork sidewalks be put in along the new drains, which is odd considering that the road itself is pitted and is like driving on the surface of the moon.

There is another issue, that of the fact that the water from rainfall will not be caught by these drains as they are in the wrong place in the camber of the road, but what the hel_l; did anyone think that they would actually function correctly?

I ended up in hospital after hitting a hole in the raod near Bandon Hospital, very dangerous, but this sort of hazard is everywhere, so be careful!

Two days ago a brandnew black Fortuner or Vigo tried to disappear into such a fresh dug hole, due to lack of efficient lightning at night. The car looked pretty totalled with all those iron spkes going into to the engine room.

In Lamai, on the bridge towards Lamai coming from Chaweng, at night there was a road sign in the middle of the road on the only stretch of raod with no lights. Could barely swerve around the obstacle.

^ I saw that Vigo, he sure took a dive.

The one hole near bandon when you are comming down the hill is rediculous. They have "fixed" it 5 times and it always caves in again. Why cant they just fill it in completly so it doesnt come back?

Also, yesterday in bophut they left a HUGE hole in the road when they stopped working and they didnt cover it or put a cone by it. I wonder how mnay people hit it. Prolly a lot because it was in the center of the lane.

Also, they are putting in these drains but they are not fixing the pot hole that are 2 feet away and have been here forever. How hard would it be to fill in some holes as they go?

Wasnt the budget for this project like 30 million baht? Where is all that money going. I bet they spent less then 1 million so far.

Poorfarang,

The budget is actually 50Mio.They have done a lot of work in Lamai as well.

The work being undertaken in bophut extends to Maenam.

They have installed drainage & footpaths.

The problem with the ring road is it falls under the highway's department jurisdiction & not the local government.

A lot of work is also being undertaken in strategic areas, building small dams & diversion mounds in anticipation of the downpours expected this season.

As for the cost so far your guess is as good as mine.

I have seen all of the drainwork being performed, but have not seen any evidence of where the drains will go...do they go under the road somewhere and exit into the sea or are they simply catch cans that look like a proper drain system?

They have cross cut across the road, out to Sea.

You Sure Rooo?

That's what I gather Limbos. If you headind north, say Lamai all the drains are on the left. They have joined them to an outlet near the brige.

Same as Bophut, they crossed the road with them.If you remember last year in Bophut when the army was there, they were pumping straight out to sea. This is why after heavy rain when you stand on a view point no matter where, you will see big patches of brown water.

Then maybe I'm wrong :o

Not too sure but ..

I think they are all actualy taking the water back to the stream beside the old Monkey Theatre soi. That stream goes past the Bophut school under the main Bophut / Bangrak road and into a small estuary and eventually out to sea. My understanding is that the drains crossing the road are actually designed to take the water away from the Anantara etc side of the road to the new large pipes on the go-cart side of the road. These large pipes then take it all the way down to that stream.

I am eagerly awaiting a decent rain to see how effective it is because they have also reclaimed some of the low area behind the plant shop which used to end up very flooded, plus that stream used to also get quite high on its own accord and coften over the monkey theatre soi - with a motorbike and passenger being swept away last year. Also the estuary is quite tidal so if they do not dig out the entrance to the sea then it will mean that it will be difficult for it to flow out.

I hope that they have done all of the engineering correctly, but certainly do not feel that confident because of the results we have seen to date - such as the roads collapsing, lack of appropriate warning signs etc...

If that is true that they will dump all of the water from the entire Bophut stretch into that one small creek/ditch at the entrance to Monkey Theater rd then look out, there will likely be massive flooding in that area. I can't forsee that that one area will be able to handle all the flow. Also, there seem to be no sand traps, maybe they are just hoping the drains are big enough to take all the water and sand and not back up I guess...Good luck to those that live on the early part of Soi Ling

If you have been to Soi Monkey of late , you would have seen that they have filled that little holding pond.Further down the road heading north opposite the Fisherman village turn off, they have put a great earth mound. You can be right, the water diverted there then out to sea.

Pope started off being a Jew,

Pigs can become airborne with enough Tax wind,

Foreigners can get cheap goods .......... well Tax as usual you have put your 2 satangs worth in.

Honestly if you are soooooooo critical of Thailand WHY in the hel_l are you here?

Sand traps, where? Today they were heaving loads of sand out of the pipes, buckets being handed up from the inside. :D

That little drain in Bophud can't take all that water, no way. It's gonna be an interesting rainy season. :o

Those drain cover are built the wrong way around !

The long slots run parallel with the traffic direction. Anyone on a bycicle or skinny wheeled motor bike be very carefull .

They got them right in Lamai , looks like only the bophut bit is wrong. One has already been caved in by the weight of a Truck.

Slowly on those bikes peoples

Try keeping it under 80kph...

The welders were out today in Lamai to do something about the grates that won't seat at all, but I suspect that the ones that more or less fit in the frame will not be corrected, even though they are hazardous.

The grating does run the wrong way for saftey.

The fact is that rain water on the road in Lamai will run off past the grating, mostly, as the grates do not extend to the edge of the road and the road is not curbed to catch the water.

"Engineering"? Is this a joke?

They must've learned something from the recent accidents, since this morning there were adeqaute warning signs in front of all construction that was going on on the road in Bophud.

They also had people with welders & stuff trying to reposition the grates in Lamai.

This is a good point. The drains are not flush with the curb so there will still be several feet of water on each side of the road right?

Just saw a horrible motorbike accident due to a construction crew blocking off part of the road in an unlit area. The motorbike was upon it before he knew what to do. Thank God he was wearing a helmet but he is in very bad shape.

God be with him. :o
