Maha Sarakham halts farm water as shortage looms

MAHA SARAKHAM, 28 October 2015 (NNT) – The governor of Maha Sarakham has announced the suspension of water supply for the rainy season’s agriculture, as the water of the main reservoir has hit an alarming level.

Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan disclosed that the Nongwai Irrigation Project in Khon Kaen Province had to lower its water supply, as the water level in Ubonrat Dam had dropped to only 28 percent of its capacity. The water suspension for agriculture applies to four districts: Muang Maha Sarakham, Kantarawichai, Chiang Yuen and Kosumphisai.

Mr. Chockchai revealed that the Nongwai Irrigation Project had provided water to the agricultural sector in Maha Sarakham Province since 8 June but had to stop diverting water to farming areas in late October to ensure enough supplies for the ecological system and consumption.

The governor added that a drought relief operation center had been set up and a water conservation campaign was ongoing. Farmers in the affected areas are advised to enroll in the government employment project for the time being.
