After reading these post,I wonder how many of you have "VPN" installed on your computer,I do and I find that I have a good connection with very little problems.

A VPN doesnt solve a bandwidth requirement

If anyone is in any doubt of the validity of this latest report from Freedom House & its ominous ramifications, you need look no further than Prayut's latest tirade at Wednesday's 5 Rivers Meetings.

What was supposed to be a 'discussion' ended up with nobody talking except for the PM for a whopping 2 hours 15 mins. The most memorable for me was; in his frenzy to rein in those who oppose his rule, Prayut said he would isolate the country from the world if that is what is required to get Thailand back on track.

Worrying words indeed. If any of our resident Juntanista's care to put a positive spin on that, I for one am all ears.

A long time ago there was a guy called Nero who played the fiddle while Rome burnt. Is history kind of repeating itself?

I use VPN on my browser and I don't have any problems. It is your IP address that gives you away.

Although I used to work in IT as a business systems analyst installing highly integrated financial systems on behalf of clients I was never really a 'techie' - shame to say! So PLEASE can you advise me, in simplistic, non-technical terms how to install a VPN on my pc?

I certainly want to avoid the threat of a single internet gateway if this is a way round it.

Thanks, in high anticipation!

Buy a VPN service from any of the reputable ones, StrongVPN, IPVanish, Express VPN to name but a few, and they will have a little applet that you can download onto your desktop to activate the VPN tunnel. thats the simplest and non techie way.

There are free ones, but they have privacy downsides, and in these 'troubled' times here I think you probably want security and anonymity above all

It is indeed, and I for one can't pretend it lacks entertainment value. Better than going to the pictures.

The ratings will decline even further next year as the army try desperately to muzzle the masses. At present the general public are losing patience with this government, most Thais now have no respect for the PM and his cohorts. Now waiting for the pot to boil over, and it will, patience has its limits.

'are losing', 'most Thai', 'no respect'

Interesting how you state your opinion as if it's fact and obviously clear for all to see.

It would seem that certainly on the Pheu Thai side and their protest armed UDD and of their 'de facto' leader.

That's four of your posts I've just read on the bounce and they're all "...but but but Thaksin/PTP/USA/NSA/GCHQ" etc etc. It would please me no end if you groupies could comment on what you think of the regime's actions rather than continually harping on about what other people have done both here and elsewhere. I should be grateful if you would tell us, what your opinion is of the internet not being free under the present government of Thailand. Do you think Freedom House is wrong and if so why?

Please remember that everyone who criticises the government's actions isn't a supporter of the PTP/Thaksin/NSA/GCHQ so in a lot of cases you are preaching to the converted. Also remember that two wrongs don't make a right.

It isn't going to happen. In case you haven't noticed by his previous posts, rubl is all about looking after rubl, whatever that takes.

There are a subsection of posters here that seem to equate any criticism of the current junta to mean the ones speaking these 'unHoly' thoughts are automatically Thaksin/Red/Yingluck/Terrorist/Bomb Throwing/Baby Eating fan boys.

Debate or rational discussion doesn't come into their narrative, it's very much, unfortunately the way the Internet has polarized discussion, where folks with visceral hatred of this or that faction, only listen to zealots with ideas the same as theirs...any deviation MUST be evil, and most definitely wrong

Sad reflection on the state of civil society

but, but, but, somehow it does seem clear that the Pheu Thai supporters here like to state with absolute faith facts, truth, as all should remember it.

BTW the post you replied to I didn't mention all those abbreviations, not even Thaksin.

PS I don't say "Freedom House" is wrong, I only say the Thai government should consult with organisations like NSA and GCHQ to find a more acceptable, 'freedom inspired' way to do the snooping.

Yes a fact, and its mostly ordinary Thais with no political leanings. Thais are becoming poorer under this government. If you can speak Thai, ask them.

Ah, you mean those Thai you speak with long for the good old times with RPPS freebies, mega projects and no worry in who will pay for all that?

So, economical crisis, global problems and all Thai blame it on the Thai government?

I thought it was just me. My 3BB internet has been funny over the last couple of weeks. Sometimes it's the usual speed, but more often now it's lagging.

More users on a fixed available bandwidth means less bandwidth and consequently slower for everyone. If anyone wants the calculation for transmission rates let me know and I will post it

Seeing that Joe Brennan iked your post I think I should mention that 'fixed available bandwidth' is normal business practise with Internet Access providers. The first to be connected to a new 'line' may have a good performance and response, but when more subscribers are connected to that 'line' the total bandwidth needs to be shared. A few movie downloaders amongst the subscribers and you might long for the days of 9.6k dial-up.

I guess the effect can be noticed clearly in new housing estates which slowly fill up.

Well thank you for your kind words, Baboon. I really appreciate how you always manage to find ways to stroke my ego and avoid discussions on contents.

You can also trim it down as well which is what some ISP's do at peak times. I totally agree with you thought in that a fixed total available bandwidth will be eaten up as more users are connected. I would guess that in order to boos profits many of the ISP's will reduce the bandwidth availble to the individual. the same goes for 3 and 4G. Users will find it wonderful when there are only a few subscribers using it but slowly it will decrease in speed. There is also the contention ratio to consider as well.

'Net Neutrality' is another hot issue. Nothing to do with the 'internet not free' in the topic, but with how ISPs divide bandwidth over users.

If 3G and 4G are separate networks, each will have a certain bandwidth. Still I guess at some point all comes together.
