Springnews TV cuts 40 staff

BANGKOK: -- The television industry has become oversupplied after the arrival of 24 digital channels. Many broadcasters are struggling to stay healthy either by managing costs or cutting jobs amid fierce competition in a flat-growth market.

Springnews TV yesterday became the latest victim of this hostile environment, announcing the lay-off of about 40 employees. It claimed this was in line with the company's newly adjusted strategy to put more emphasis on the production of economic and international news.

"The lay-off of 40 staff, mainly cameramen and their assistants and reporters, was not a significant figure. I would say that this decision was [in compliance with] labour law, because we informed them 30 days in advance," Watanya Wongopasi, vice chairwoman for business management of Springnews Corporation, told The Nation yesterday. Those laid off will receive three months' compensation under a voluntary package.

Watanya said her company had set a business direction to become a multi-platform provider. In news production, Springnews TV will put more focus on weak points including economic and foreign affairs, on top of its key strength in political and social news reporting.

"We had to cut some costs as well as jobs that are not related to our key direction. In the near future, we will recruit new staff for our new businesses like radio, which was launched last week, and other new media business," she said.

Oversupply challenge

Although Springnews TV is among the top-rated news stations, Watanya acknowledged that oversupply remained the big challenge for the industry. Therefore, her company wants to maintain its advertising rates for next year.

Springnews Corporation is the parent of Springnews Television, a terrestrial-based digital channel for news programmes. After the job cut, the channel still has about 400 staff.

She said that her company would maintain this number.

However, an industry source told The Nation that the job cut was a result of its holding company Solution Corners 1998 (SLC), which is now renamed News Corporation, took over T News, a satellite TV station. After the merger, some high-ranking executives and news editors from T News were reportedly transferred to work at Springnews TV.

Earlier, Thai TV Co, the operator of Thai TV news station and Loca family channel, also ran into problems.

In June, Pantipa Sakulchai, president of Thai TV Co, decided offer staff for voluntary resignation packages as a part of a cost-management plan. She wanted to give up her digital terrestrial TV business after suffering huge losses while shouldering operating costs of at least Bt1.9 billion a month.

She said in a previous interview that she needed to return to the satellite-TV business. At that time, it was reported that 20 of the company's 400 staff members resigned under the voluntary conditions.

Not surprising.

I'd think that the NCPO can provide all the necessary production of economic and international news.

Being in journalism, whether TV news or print, is not exactly the best career option right now. Ought to do more entertainment programming.
