Hi folks, I am currently completing my final year at university and have to do a major project (dissertation). My chosen subject is on the levels/strategies of maintenance required in a romantic relationship with a particular interest in intercultural marriages. A bit long winded I know but the main point I will be trying to make is that couples in an intercultural relationship require higher levels of maintenance than a regular relationship needs. So I will need some volunteers in the very near future to follow a link to survey monkey or something similar to complete a questionnaire ideally it would be great to get both sides of the relationship to each complete a questionnaire as this would give me a better understanding and provide better data. Anyone taking part would need to also fill in a short consent form and would be anonymous (no real names needed). Moderators please post this in the appropriate location if wrong. I would like to thank all for taking their time to read this and welcome any constructive feedback and also indication if you would like to take part.

You really are going to have to nail the definition of intercultural.

Does intercultural mean that both people are different ethnicities? Or that they come from different cultures? Or both?

How would you classify a black person marrying a white person, both of whom were born and raised in the same city?

What about religion? Does that impact on culture? If two people live on the same street, are the same ethnicity but a different religion are they from a different culture? What about Protestants marrying Catholics?

What about two Thai people. One born in the US and one born in Thailand? Do they have different cultures?

Does education affect intercultural compatibility? If both partners have Masters degrees, would that change their responses? What about international travel? Would that matter? Does having an equal income affect compatibility?

Importantly, would the respondents to your survey define themselves as being from different cultures?

Perhaps the best definition of intercultural would be where the respondents self identify as being in an intercultural relationship. If this was question 1 then it would save you a lot of effort defining the term yourself as your tutor cannot disagree with individual participant's responses.

Best of luck designing your survey questions. You have picked an interesting but challenging area of research.
