Phuket motorists can't stop making illegal u-turns

The small section of road now needing the barriers is a break in the median in front of Phuket International Hospital.

PHUKET: -- The Phuket Highways Office has vowed to install more barriers at a second section of the bypass road where concrete barriers have been removed so that motorbikes can again make illegal turns.

The news follows the office already installing barrier posts to stop motorists making illegal u-turns near the northern entrance to the Darasamuth Underpass earlier this month.

The small section of road now needing the barriers is a break in the median in front of Phuket International Hospital. The gap originally allowed emergency vehicles quickly access to the hospital, but was blocked with concrete blocks when construction of the new drainage system along that section of the bypass road began.

The Highways Office, when told of the illegal u-turns by The Phuket News, said they were unaware that one of the concrete blocks had been removed and that motorists were now using the gap to make u-turns.

Phuket Highways Office Director Samak Lueduanghad told The Phuket News on Saturday (Oct 24), “I thought that when Wichit police blocked the u-turn with concrete blocks that would be sufficient to stop people from making u-turns there and that they would force to use the correct u-turn at Central Festival Phuket.

“I will let the police know and ask them to block the u-turn again. Hopefully this will be done on Monday (Oct 26) before anybody has an accident.”

However, as of yesterday morning (Oct 29) motorists were still making illegal u-turns on the busy road.

Agree.....it is a ridiculous concept.......having to leave their boxes, A/C offices and pubs to actually go out and work, just isn't cricket!

If traffic keeps making U turns there, why not make it a U turn area and <deleted>, make a lane for it instead of forcing traffic to the left into the lane of faster

moving cars to get around cones.

The law only applies to someone else and not me...

A mentality that permeates Thai society from the top levels and right down to the bottom rungs.

Yes, enforcement is a big part of it, but city planning, or lack of it, also plays a key role.

In Bkk there are very few roads that go through, thus making drivers go a long distance out of their way to get where they intend to go. This creates even more traffic.

These ridiculous 3 way intersections everywhere that gives the right of way to the traffic that is turning instead of the traffic that is going straight is simply retarded.

Ease done (IF THEY WANT TO ) Get the cops of their <deleted> and fine them B 10000 and confiscate their vehicle and or bike.

It done me the first time I seen the barriers at the Heroines Monument round-a-bout preventing road users from, well, going around the round-a-bout? plastic barriers blocked access forcing users to go on straight until you then do a suicidal u-turn within a few plastic road cones into the fast lane of oncoming traffic and come back on yourself back to the round-a-bout and take a left.... W T F? I then realized there is no hope for road safety in LOS??? NUTZ!!

Also the infamous one way system around Patong, twiddle with it every few years is a Joke, maybe LOS should have just stuck to the Water buffalo and cart?

This happens often in provinces Udornthani, Nongkhai, Nongbualamphu and so on. Udornthani a while back had a real problem with access to the general hospital due illegal car parking so and placed concrete sections to prevent cars entering. What happened? Motor got through and filled up the space instead. The point was that the bikes had to drive along the right and simply lifted the bikes over a narrow grass central reservation. New road with central reservation Nongbualamphu half way to Naklang. Both motorbikes and trucks have made their own paths across in several places. No one stops them even when there are police check points close by. Saying that, I'm sure other forum members have similar stories.

Why not give every one of them a 50 000 fine? And put them in jail for one month? Confiscate their bike, wallet, t-shirt and whatever they owns, just stop them.

Just as much fun in Pattaya. They blocked a U-Turn on Nua near the bus station, and so it was happening at the Sukhumvit junction, barriers were put there, it was still happening. The barriers were extended further, now jutting into Suk traffic, it still happens. Mostly it is baht buses, who make their U-Turn, often from the central or left side of Nua and also impact on Northbound Suk traffic turning left into Nua. The turn into Soi Sophon from 3rd is a similar story. These locations would be ideal money spinners for the police, but no, tourists without helmets a more acceptable source of revenue.

Take the name, ID and motorbike number of each one caught, tell them if they do it again and are caught, their motorcycle will be scrapped whether it is old or brand new. Motorbikes should be put in a baler and reduced to a small cube, no bikes to be resold, only scrapped. Plus their driving license should be taken away for one year. Sounds harsh, it is the only way they will learn.

I'll bet there are some guys there in that area in brown uniforms with badges and guns who could do something about this little problem.

But they won't!!

They would actually have to get up off their dead arse and do something.
