Police Gen. Wutthi Phuawade spoke at news conference on Nov. 2, 2015

MAE HONG SON — A British tourist was raped in northern Thailand last week, and a deputy commander of the national police force said Monday it was because a bar stayed open too late.

The assault took place in the town of Pai in Mae Hong Son province in the early hours of Oct. 25, and a Chiang Mai man was arrested Friday in connection with the crime, according to deputy police chief Wutthi Phuawade, who said the suspect assaulted the victim after she left a bar.

“The main factor that led to the incident was because of an entertainment establishment that opened later than the time prescribed by law, which made the tourist become drunk and senseless,” Wutthi said at a news conference yesterday.

He said police would respond to the rape by more strictly enforcing operating hours in Pai, a popular tourist destination.

“Police in each jurisdiction will strictly inspect whether any entertainment establishment opens later than the legal closing time. They must strictly adhere to the closing time. If any jurisdiction allows any establishment to disobey the closing time, the officers in charge will be punished for negligence.”

"Tourist was drunk & senseless". No heart and no soul from this copper. Venting his fury at more Thailand spotlight & him being the designated spokesperson.

Err, no. It was because some toe-rag thought he could get away with it. The Plod really ought to consider what their words sound like in those countries they want tourist money from - have they not yet learned that whitey takes a rather dim view of such opinions?

Now this is one idiot who really IS in need of "attitude adjustment"..........................

Due to the fact that YOU sir and your 'police officers' finish work at 6 pm and are no where to be seen in the evenings except perhaps armed and in bars getting pissed for free.

The fact that the perp knows that you will do nothing, investigate nothing and will gladly take a kick back to let said perp go, all adds to this being your fault.

Do your <deleted> jobs. bah.gif

Before you go pointing the finger at this cop, accusing him of once again being a typical Thai policeman by blaming the farang for causing her own crime (being senselessly drunk), this type of thing happens all over the world where brainless chauvinistic a$$holes blame the woman for causing someone to rape her. He's a complete moron but it's not just a Thai thing.

He should be sent to an inactive post

What an intellect this chap is. Definitely a prime candidate promoting how good the RTP are. Sadly I don't want to brand everyone the same but when you have someone in such a high ranking position coming out with outrageous and ignorant comments, it is hard not too.

Obviously a charmer of a man too.

He should be sent to an inactive post

How about demoted to traffic duties, as he has the intelligence to do that job, possibly.

What, was she wearing a short skirt as well...? tsk, tsk, asking for it...

He should be sent to an inactive post

He's already in one!

From the same school of diplomacy as K. Prayuth.

Does this article accurately reflect exactly what the policeman said or is it a mangled interpretation of what was spoken in Thai ?

I felt raped just from reading this.

This happened a week ago and this is the first it is reported.

This culture of saving face, covering things up or keeping things quiet is utterly nauseating.

No doubt the authorities in Pai were more concerned about potential negative impact on tourism than actually seeking justice for the poor British victim.

The police officer's comments here are insensitive and unprofessional at best and downright reprehensible at worst.

"Tourist was drunk & senseless". bar was open too late... sure blame it on the tourist, and this is from

a country that plan to spend 120 million baht to attract more tourists, am I missing something here?

I wonder how this moron got his position in the first place.

Promotion - tomato style. Corruption is all that matters.

In a civilized police force, he would be sacked immediately for such an outrageous statement. Maybe he speaks from personal experience.

yeah right and all the illegal beer bars on Asoke near Soi Cowboy will be shutdown before 4am that they run to now..... oh wait, I did say ILLEGAL beer bars. The whole area from Sukhumvit to the Pullman smells like an open urinal every mroning along with that lovely vomit smell!!!!!

This is the new spokesman?

This is a genuine reaction from the RTP.....this is what they really think of foreigners....drunk women are way down their list...drunk men are only somewhat down their list.

As usual, here they are again displaying to the world, how their little minds work!

Such BS, the only cause of rape is rapists.

"Tourist was drunk & senseless". No heart and no soul from this copper. Venting his fury at more Thailand spotlight & him being the designated spokesperson.

He is right.

Have no excuses for rapists, but women do have certain responsibilities to themselves to ensure they keep safe and not vulnerable, as do we all regardless of the situations.

This is, sadly, the type of cretin who somehow gets a position of power in Thailand and immediately demonstrates why he is totally unfit for the job.

This police general is right on target...people never get drunk or get raped in the day or early night. Great investigative work, general....credit to the force you are.

Due to the fact that YOU sir and your 'police officers' finish work at 6 pm and are no where to be seen in the evenings except perhaps armed and in bars getting pissed for free.

What country are we in? And what is the name of this website?

I blame it on the absence of police at the designated hour hehe

'tard.

Im just astounded that rape exists in thailand….why …. when anyone can summon up a woman to 'take care' from 300b upwards.

If I would write down, what I think about this "person", I would lose my posting rights for decades!

So let's just say: what a tool!
