Singapore happy to facilitate meeting between China, Taiwan leaders

SINGAPORE: -- Singapore is happy to facilitate a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, as reported by Channel News Asia.

An MFA spokesman said Singapore was requested by both sides to help facilitate the meeting between the top leaders from the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

“This is a milestone in the history of cross-strait relations since 1949. As a close and longstanding friend of both Mainland China and Taiwan, we are happy to facilitate and be the venue for their direct dialogue.”

“Singapore has consistently upheld a ‘One China’ policy and supported initiatives that contribute to the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, including direct exchanges between the two sides

such as the historic talks (between Chinese official Wang Daohan and Taiwan’s Koo Chen-<deleted>) held in Singapore in 1993,” the MFA spokesperson added.

The meeting between Mr Xi and Mr Ma will be separate from the Chinese President’s state visit to Singapore on Nov 6-7.

Mr Xi and Mr Ma’s meeting will be the the first between the leaders of China and Taiwan since the end of a civil war in 1949. The leaders are set to “exchange views on cross-strait issues”, according to Mr Ma’s spokesperson.
